Learner Tien suffered a shocking opening loss to Rafael Jodar, and last year’s finalist, who is the tournament favorite this week, and appears in real danger of group stage elimination. Tien went down in five sets against the 19-year-old Spaniard. Tien squandered four match points, one of which was on his serve at 3-1 in the fifth set and he eventually lost in a tiebreak.

Tien was on a five-match winning run before that loss, having captured his first ATP Tour title to crown a breakthrough season at the Tour level in style at the Metz Open. Tien is the sole top 100 player in Jeddah; in fact, he is ranked 28th in the rankings. 

Martin Landaluce also suffered a surprise defeat, losing out to Nikolai Budkov Kjaer. Landaluce had a perfect record against the Norwegian, winning all three meetings they contested in 2025, but produced an error-filled display to lose in four sets. 

Landaluce hit 38 unforced errors in defeat, and only 15 winners. He gave away as many as nine break points and was broken five times in the match. That was his third defeat in a row. His last match win was in mid-October when he beat Dusan Lajovic at the Olbia Challenger.
