Within a span of one year, Reilly Opelka has managed to cut down his ATP ranking to almost within two digits. At this time last year, he was outside the top 1000. 

This week, ahead of his opening match at the Dallas Open, Opelka is ranked 145th. He has been granted a main draw wild card. It will be his second participation at the event.

Opelka won this tournament in 2022 beating Jenson Brooksby in the final. That was one of two ATP titles he won that season before injuries curtailed his momentum when he looked to be on his way into the top 10.

The tall American has recovered from injuries but has needed to overcome some niggles this year just to stay competitive. This will be his first tournament since the Australian Open when he lost to Tomas Machac in five sets.

His other appearance was in Brisbane. He reached the final there but retired due to injury against Jiri Lehecka.

Alexander Shevchenko Preview

Alexander Shevchenko also had a productive stay in Australia. He was part of the Kazakhstan team that reached the United Cup semifinals. 

Shevchenko produced one of the upsets of the tournament by beating Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas. The 24-year-old was unlucky to draw Carlos Alcaraz in the opening round of the Australian Open and lost in straight sets.

He has since appeared for his country in the Davis Cup where he earned a singles win over Muzammil Murtaza of Pakistan. Shevchenko is set to make his debut appearance in Dallas. Last year, he won eight of 17 matches indoors.

Opelka was untouchable when he won this tournament three years ago. He never lost a set and pinched six tie-breaks en route to the title. The 27-year-old’s fitness is the only predicament coming into this match (he’s already recorded one retirement this year). If he’s healthy, he’ll win. We cannot overstate just how incredible Opelka’s serve is, but he’s also a super athlete with his mobility sometimes ridiculing his stature. He’s the favorite here and we’ll take him on money line.
