Petra Kvitova will play in her first WTA tournament as a mother. The 34-year-old Czech was granted a wild card into the WTA 250 in Austin. She will play her first match in over a year against Jodie Burrage.

Before taking a maternity break, Kvitova last featured on Tour in the 2023 season in which she won 30 of 43 matches. That year, Kvitova won two titles – one in Miami and the other on the grass in Berlin.

Her last match was in October 2023, losing to Liudmila Samsonova in Beijing. Kvitova gave birth in July last year, to a healthy baby boy called Petr. Her husband Jiri Vanek is also her coach and they normally travel to tournaments together.

Kvitova has been practicing for a few weeks since she announced her comeback and is due to play in Indian Wells next month too.

Jodie Burrage Preview

Jodie Burrage was a decision away from retirement in the middle of 2024. She played in San Diego qualifying at this time last year and was out of action thereafter for almost seven months.

Burrage underwent wrist surgery in March 2024 and also injured her ankle in May, prompting her to have second thoughts on whether to stick on the Tour.

The Briton trusted her instincts and decided to give tennis a second chance and she had some very positive results on her return to action. She won her biggest career title at the W100 ITF in Dubai during the off-season.
