The 20-year-old is one of the newest crop of American players who are steadily climbing the WTA rankings. Krueger is within touching distance of the Top 50 (currently ranked 54th).

Krueger’s one and only main draw appearance in Adelaide resulted in a first-round defeat to Veronika Kudermetova 12 months ago.

I’m really looking forward to this matchup between two very talented women. Krueger, who is only 20, has a big game with a blend of power and a high-risk appetite. She’s not afraid of going for more if that brings her instant and high reward. Maybe that was the reason why she only made sporadic improvements in 2024, unlike in 2023 when it looked like her career was going places.

Kostyuk is certainly the more talented of the two and has spent more time at the highest level, competing with the very best from her teenage years. It was this past year when she was on the trajectory to reach her ceiling, beating Top 10 players multiple times and winning 34 matches in total. That discipline and consistency that defined Kostyuk’s 2024 season were nonexistent in her loss in Brisbane, but I think she has so much quality that’ll prevent her from repeating that poor performance.
