It wasn’t until June that Karolina Muchova was cleared by her doctors to play competitively having been out of action since September 2023. Muchova was suffering from serious wrist pain and was even forced to forfeit her spot at the 2023 WTA Finals in Cancun. 

She eventually underwent surgery in February this year before making her comeback at the WTA 250 event in Eastbourne on grass. It didn’t take long for Muchova to find her form, reaching her first final of last season in Palermo (lost to Qinwen Zheng).

Muchova then competed in four hard-court tournaments after the Paris Olympics and performed extremely well. She made two semifinals, one of those being at the US Open again, and achieved a runner-up finish in Beijing. 

For a season that only in June, Muchova did impeccably well to finish with a 21-7 record and draw closer to a Top 20 return.

Malene Helgo Preview

Malene Helgo might be an unpopular name for casual tennis fans, but she is a player who has fostered her career playing at the lower levels. Now 25, Helgo is a winner of nine career titles on the ITF circuit, with three of those coming in 2024.

While Muchova is set to make her maiden appearance at the United Cup, Helgo is no stranger to competing in this tournament. She has played five singles matches in each of the last two seasons without getting a single win.

But the Norwegian has surprised even her opponents with her work rate, managing to take a set from each of Martina Trevisan, Donna Vekic, and Caroline Garcia. So Muchova will not be underestimating her opponent’s ability.

Very few players can make tennis look as effortless as Muchova. It’s still a mystery to me how she hasn’t added to her lone WTA title which she won five years ago. She does have a messy injury record which has definitely hampered her success. If she can stay healthy for a full season, I think Muchova is capable of winning multiple titles. I expect her to assert her authority in this match with her flashy and precise shotmaking and give Czechia the lead in the tie, but Helgo’s history at this tournament could be her source of motivation to keep it close.
