Jack Draper sits at a career-high ranking of No. 4 and is the British No. 1. Draper is dealing with heightened expectations after a sensational start to 2025. He is considered one of the favorites to win this year’s Wimbledon. If he is to win his first Grand Slam, Draper will need to improve on his poor record at the Championships. He has not advanced beyond the second round stage in three previous main draw appearances. But it can be argued that it was before he tapped into his ceiling and improved his physical conditioning.

Draper started the tournament with a retirement win over Argentina’s Sebastian Baez. Draper won the first set 6-2 in under half an hour. And he bagged the second set by a similar score. The Briton led 2-1 with a break in the third set when Baez was forced to quit because of injury.

Overall, Draper posted some good numbers. He recorded 25 winners and 22 unforced errors. That figure included 10 aces and one double fault. He landed 66% of first serves in play and won 93% of first serve points (25/27). Draper won 79% of second serve points (11/14) and did not face a single break point in the match.

His opponent, Marin Cilic, is a former finalist at Wimbledon. The experienced Croat reached his one and only Wimbledon final back in 2017 and lost to Roger Federer in straight sets. Cilic is looking to rekindle those happy memories in his first Wimbledon appearance since 2021. He’s dealt with chronic knee injuries in recent years, but arrived in this year’s tournament in splendid form. Ciclic won the Nottingham Challenger last month on grass and carried that streak to SW19. He won his opening match against Raphael Collignon in straight sets.

Cilic spent less than two hours to round off a 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 victory. He fired 33 winners and 22 unforced errors in the match. That included 16 aces. Cilic landed 59% of first serves in play and won 84% of first serve points (37/44). Cilic won 58% of second serve points (18/31) and saved three of four break points.

Jack Draper is one of the top favorites for the men’s title, and he’s playing with a lot of confidence. Cilic is a Grand Slam champion, but he’s no longer the player of his yesteryears. He’s still dangerous, though, on fast courts, and since his comeback, he’s captured a couple of titles and one of those was on grass in Nottingham this past month. I’m still intrigued to see how Cilic’s body will hold up if this goes to four or five, but I doubt it will get there as fatigue will likely creep in. That said, Draper’s form, fitness, and momentum should help him to another comfortable win.
