Iva Jovic is competing at the WTA 500 in Guadalajara for the first time. The young American won her opening match over Polish veteran Katarzyna Kawa in three sets. Jovic was the huge favorite to beat Kawa but secured a hard-fought victory in two hours and eight minutes.

Jovic won the first set 6-4, breaking Kawa at least twice, and needed at least two games to bag the set from 5-3 up. Kawa was the better player in the second set as she broke Jovic’s serve twice to take a 5-1 lead. Although she stumbled while serving for the set in her first attempt, Kawa made no mistake in the 10th game, holding to love to level the match. But despite going a break up twice in the third set, Kawa was broken back almost immediately, and it was Jovic who racked up three games in a row from 3-all to complete the turnaround.

Camila Osorio, meanwhile, beat Kamilla Rakhimova in straight sets in their rematch in Guadalajara to extend her 100% winning record against the Russian (now 5-0). Osorio won two identical sets 7-5, 7-5, in an hour and 51 minutes. In the victory, Osorio hit four aces and five double faults.

Osorio landed 91% of first serves in play and won 56% of first serve points (40/72). She won 71% of second serve points (5/7) and saved three of eight break points. This was her first since she defeated Moyuka Uchijima in the first round of the Cincinnati Open and just her third since the end of May in all tournaments. Osorio was a semifinalist when she played in Guadalajara last season.
