Holger Rune is ranked 14th in the ATP rankings and is making his fourth appearance in the main draw of the Rotterdam Open. 

Rune has lost in the last 16 in each of his two previous appearances at this indoor hard court tournament, with defeat to Alexander Shevchenko last year perhaps the most shocking.

The Dane famously won a maiden Masters 1000 indoors in Paris-Bercy almost three years ago, but hasn’t lived up to that achievement in the last couple of seasons.

Rune has started the 2025 season with three defeats from seven matches. His best result so far was in reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open where he lost to eventual champion Jannik Sinner in four sets.

Lorenzo Sonego Preview

Lorenzo Sonego is ranked 34th in the ATP rankings and is making his fourth main draw appearance in Rotterdam. Sonego has a dismal record at this ATP 500 event. He has lost in the first round in each of his three previous participations, including last year to Grigor Dimitrov.

The draw has never been kind to him and will play a top-20 player to begin his campaign this week. The Italian, however, will be in a buoyant mood after a fantastic start to the season. 

Sonego made his first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the Australian Open in January, scoring eye-catching wins over Stan Wawrinka and Next Gen stars Joao Fonseca and Learner Tien.

Sonego hasn’t played since January and owns a 6-3 in 2025.

I’m going with a Rune victory in three. Sonego is no pushover on this surface despite his terrible record in Rotterdam (0-3). The conditions are synonymous with being slower here, so that favours Rune who will look to boss the rallies. If anything, Sonego can at least try to make this competitive. He’s confident after a great run in Melbourne. But this is his first tournament since, so maybe he’ll need some time to shake off the rust. Rune is the safe bet in this one.
