Gael Monfils will play Nishesh Basavareddy in the first round of the 2025 Cincinnati Open. The match is scheduled for Friday, August 8. Here’s our Gael Monfils vs Nishesh Basavareddy prediction. This preview will also include a Gael Monfils vs Nishesh Basavareddy pick.
Gael Monfils vs Nishesh Basavareddy Preview
Gael Monfils is ranked 48th in the ATP rankings, with the French veteran one of the oldest players to feature in this year’s draw. This will be his 14th and potentially last appearance at the Cincinnati Open for Monfils. The 38-year-old made his debut as a teenager back in 2005 and has reached the last 16 in each of his last three appearances. Monfils’ best result in Cincinnati was a quarterfinal run in 2011 when he lost to Novak Djokovic in three sets.
Monfils is playing in what could be his farewell season with the former World No. 6 hinting at retirement in the last few months. Monfils confirmed he had played his last Canadian Open this past week, where he lost in his opening match to Barrios Vera. That result extended his winless streak to three matches and has a dismal record of one win in his last seven matches at all levels. Worryingly for Monifls, most of those defeats came against players ranked lower than him.
Nishesh Basavareddy is competing in his first season on the ATP Tour. He is ranked 111th in the ATP rankings and has touched the Top 100 only briefly this season. Basavareddy’s 2025 season started brightly in Australia and New Zealand, where he made his first ATP semifinal in Auckland and lost to Monfils, and then took a set from Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open. In fact, he lost in his first two tournaments in January to the Frenchman. Clay was quite a difficult hurdle for Basavareddy to navigate. He lost in the first round in at least four tournaments. The same pattern continued on grass, where the 20-year-old’s limited experience on the surface was exposed (again lost his opening match in three tournaments).
Basavareddy returned to hard courts in mid-July and has since returned to winning ways. He rached the quarterfinals of the Lexington Challenger, tallying 12 hard-court wins in 2025. This will be his maiden main draw appearance in Cincinnati, having missed out from the Canada cut-off.
Gael Monfils vs Nishesh Basavareddy Head-To-Head
Monfils and Basavareddy have played twice, with both meetings happening this season. Monfils got the better of his young opponent, beating him twice in the opening month of the season.
Gael Monfils vs Nishesh Basavareddy Prediction
I fancy the overs in the total games here and a potential upset is very much on the cards. Monfils has hardly been playing like himself in recent months. Nobody knows if it is a fitness issue or time is finally catching up to the evergreen Frenchman. One win in seven and three defeats in a row is the kind of statistic that makes it tough to justify him as the pre-match favorite. Basavareddy pushed Monfils to his limits in both matches they played on hard courts earlier this year. And with the Frenchman out of form, I think this match could go longer than expected, with Basavareddy likely to get a set.
