Emma Raducanu is back on court playing in her first tournament since the end of March in Miami. Raducanu recorded her best result yet at the WTA 1000, where she reached the quarterfinals in Florida, besting the American trio of Emma Navarro, McCartney Kessler, and Amanda Anisimova. She hit a stumbling block in the last eight against eventual finalist Jessica Pegula.

It was a very good week nonetheless for the Briton, who would withdraw from the Billie Jean King Cup qualifying the week after in order to rest. Raducanu did not participate in any other WTA event and will therefore begin her clay swing in Madrid. This will only be her third main draw appearance in the Spanish capital. She reached the last 16 in 2022 but lost in the opening round last season to Maria Carle. She only played four clay-court matches in 2024 and declined to play in the French Open qualifying.

Suzan Lamens Preview

Suzan Lamens is coming off a semifinal run at the WTA 250 event in Rouen this past week, where she earned some big wins over the returning Bianca Andreescu and Linda Noskova. She’s won five of her past six matches on clay, including two at the BJK Cup qualifying. Lamens has a respectable 15-10 record in 2025, tallying eight wins on hard courts.

The Dutchwoman is ranked 69th in the WTA rankings, just 22 spots below Emma Raducanu. Last season, Lamens won 17 of 27 clay matches and lifted the W100 ITF title in Oeiras, Portugal. She was also a quarterfinalist at the WTA 250 in Budapest. This will be her first main draw appearance at the Madrid Open.

Although Raducanu starts as the heavy favorite here at -250, I must go with Lamens to win outright. The Dutchwoman has played six matches on clay courts in the past two weeks, managing a semifinal run in Rouen with two scorching wins over Andreescu and Noskova. There are no shortcuts when it comes to clay-court tennis and consistency, sufficient match play and endurance are absolutely crucial – three attributes that I wouldn’t associate with Raducanu right now, who is favored by the bookies on name value only.
