Danielle Collins was unsuccessful in defending her titles in Miami and Charleston and had dropped out of the Top 30. The first one was in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, at the end of March, and the other was in Bogota, Colombia, where she kicked off her clay-court campaign. Like Collins, Maria lost those two tournaments to players who went on to win the title (Cristian and Osorio).

Maria had a 7-12 record on clay last season. The 37-year-old was in action this past weekend, where she represented Germany at the Billie Jean King Cup.
