Coco Gauff opened up her Wuhan debut in style, beating Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova 6-1, 6-2 in an hour and 16 minutes. She extends her win streak to seven matches having captured the China Open title at the weekend with six wins in Beijing.

In the victory, Gauff tallied fives aces and the same number of double faults. She landed 60% of first serves and won 83% of first-serve points (24/29). Gauff won 37% of second-serve points (7/19) and converted five of nine break points.

Marta Kostyuk, meanwhile, benefitted from a walkover from Amanda Anisimova, who withdrew from the tournament just hours before their match. Kostyuk, therefore, will be in the fourth round of the Wuhan Open for the first time. 

Kostyuk got a much-needed day off after her marathon and chaotic opening match against Elina Avanesyan which took two hours and 38 minutes. In that encounter, Kostyuk met some fierce resistance and stared at another early defeat in China, but recovered from a set and a break down to win 4-6, 7-5, 7-6.
