World No. 50 Caty McNally faces World No. 41 Janice Tjen in the first round of the Eastbourne Open on Tuesday, June 23. This will be their second meeting. McNally has picked up one grass-court title at the 125K level about a year ago, while Tjen is vastly inexperienced on the surface. The Indonesian had never played on grass before this year. Will McNally’s experience prove insurmountable? Here’s our Caty McNally vs Janice Tjen prediction. This preview will also include a Caty McNally vs Janice Tjen pick.

Caty McNally vs Janice Tjen Preview

Caty McNally is now a Top 50 singles player for the first time in her career. The American has achieved this milestone at the start of this week in Eastbourne, sitting exactly at No. 50 in the WTA rankings. It’s an incredible effort by the Ohio native who spent almost the whole of the 2024 season out of action because of elbow surgery and had to relaunch her career from scratch upon her return to tennis.

This season, McNally has compiled 17 wins and 15 losses. She’s made at least two quarterfinals at the WTA level, with her most recent one on grass in Den Bosch, where she beat compatriot Emma Navarro. She also reached the third round in Indian Wells and the fourth round of the Madrid Open. McNally has won three of her last five matches on grass, losing in the round of 16 in Nottingham a week ago. This will be her main draw debut at the Eastbourne Open.

Janice Tjen is ranked World No. 41 ahead of her debut appearance at the Eastbourne Open. Tjen sits five spots below her best ranking of No. 36. She is currently the top-ranked Indonesian singles player. The 24-year-old has compiled 12 wins and 17 losses in 2026. Her best result was helping her country advance to the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup Play-offs back in April, where she won four singles rubbers. At tour level, Tjen has not quite hit her stride this term. She is on a three-match losing streak on grass. Before this year, Tjen had never played a professional match on the lawns.

Caty McNally vs Janice Tjen Head-To-Head

McNally and Tjen have played once on the ITF level. McNally won that match on at the Evansville ITF on hard courts last year in straight sets.

Caty McNally vs Janice Tjen Prediction

McNally has enjoyed some grass-court success in her career, winning the Newport Beach 125K tournament during her comeback last year. And thanks to her doubles expertise, McNally’s hand skills suit grass where low bounces can be tricky to deal with. It’s unlike anything that Tjen has faced so far in her career, with the Indonesian appearing just four times on the surface. I expect McNally’s experience and variety to give her full control of this match.

Nur Said's Pick: McNally in straight sets
