Caroline Garcia has played in just one tournament this season, which was the Australian Open, and lost in the opening round to four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka.

Garcia finished last year with a disappointing 17-17 record, winning just two matches since June, and was forced to end her season in mid-September after Guadalajara because of injury.

She vowed to come back stronger, but it’s possible that she might have needed additional recovery time hence her lack of playing time in January. 

Garcia will make her second appearance in Abu Dhabi. She lost on her debut 12 months ago in the first round to Sorana Cirstea.

Lulu Sun Preview

Unlike Garcia, Lulu Sun has played in four tournaments in January. The New Zealander is yet to win a match though, losing in the first round in Auckland, Hobart, the Australian Open, and more recently in Linz.

The concerning thing for Sun is that she lost her last two matches in straight sets, with the most shocking result being a first-round loss in Melbourne to Danka Kovinic who was slated as a +900 underdog before their match.

Sun is a Grand Slam quarterfinalist, famously achieving this feat at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. It is that breakthrough run at the All England Club that propelled her into the top 100 and eventually entered the top 50 thanks to her run to the Monterrey final in August.

Currently ranked 45th in the world rankings, Sun is making her debut in Abu Dhabi.

I’m not really sure what to expect here between two struggling players, but the general expectation is that we should get some good tennis if they both decide to turn it on. I thought Garcia played well at the Australian Open in a three-set defeat to Naomi Osaka, but the lack of playing time before and after the tournament might suggest she has not fully recovered from the shoulder injury that kept her out of the sport in the last quarter of the 2024 season.

Sun is a big ball striker as well, who happens to be so inconsistent, with her last two defeats being extremely concerning. I wouldn’t tip my hat on either of these two players, so I’m sitting on the fence here and backing three sets.
