Bianca Andreescu played in her first tournament since the US Open at last week’s Japan Open in Osaka. Lack of match sharpness was evident considering that she did not play competitively for almost two months. Andreescu lost quite handily to Greet Minnen in the Japanese capital, managing to post just three games.

That crushing loss means that Andreescu remains winless in five matches. Her last match win was at the Paris Olympics in late July when she beat Clara Tauson on the Roland Garros clay. She is yet to win on a hard court this season, which is mildly surprising, but is worth mentioning she only played her first tournament on the surface this year at the Canadian Open in August.

Wang Xinyu enters the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo in great form. The World No 39 is coming off her maiden semifinal run at a WTA 1000 tournament in Wuhan where she defeated a top five player in Jessica Pegula. Wang’s run was eventually ended by countrywoman Zheng Qinwen.

It’s the second time she’s made a semifinal this year (also a semifinalist in Hua Hin). She is 18-16 on hard courts in 2024 and overall, she has compiled 31 match wins across all surfaces. Wang will make her second appearance at the Tokyo 500 event. She  reached the round of 16 on her debut two years ago.

Bianca Andreescu is languishing outside the Top 100. She’s not been healthy for most of this season. She’s only played 18 matches all year. Wins have been rare, just nine so far. And she is on a five-match losing streak. Wang Xinyu, by contrast, has established herself as China’s No. 2 player and is riding on that terrific semifinal run from Wuhan. It’s hard to pick against the in-form World No. 39 here. Give me Wang for the victory to extend Andreescu’s misery.
