Bianca Andreescu is finally making her competitive return to tennis after missing three and a half months of the 2025 season. Andreescu was out of action because of an injury and then had to postpone her comeback because of an emergency appendectomy. She had been training on clay in Monte Carlo in preparation for her first tournament of the season in Rouen. Andreescu took the tournament’s wild card offer and will, therefore, make her debut at this WTA 250 event.

Last year, Andreescu also started her season on clay, competing at Roland Garros, and didn’t take long to hit the ground running and win her opening match at the clay-court Grand Slam. But she has a tough opener in Rouen against the Netherlands’ newest stars. Andreescu is currently ranked 130th in the WTA official rankings.

Suzan Lamens Preview

Suzan Lamens won two singles matches at the Billie Jean King Cup qualifying on home soil this past week but could not help the Dutch qualify for the Finals, losing out to Great Britain in the decisive tie. Lamens had won two matches in six before the BJK Cup weekend and, therefore, could not rise higher than 70th in the rankings.

The 25-year-old is coming off a breakout season on the WTA Tour in which she won her maiden WTA title in Osaka, Japan, last year. Lamens won 50 matches at all levels last season and lifted two additional titles on the ITF Tour. She is also a very accomplished clay-court player, having won more matches there than on any other surface.

Andreescu comes to Rouen cold, both in surface familiarity and match sharpness. She hasn’t played a match since October 2024. Historically, clay is not her strongest surface, and she will need time to get her tennis skillset up to action – that’s unlikely to happen in her first match. Lamens, by contrast, is coming off two high-quality wins at the BJK Cup on clay courts (indoors) and has shown clear progression in her game in the last 18 months. As tempting as it is to lean toward an Andreescu win at plus money, I don’t see her getting a result here for the reasons I’ve mentioned. Lamens gets my vote for a big W.
