Ben Shelton is up to a career-high of No. 13 in the ATP rankings. The American is coming off a semifinal finish at the Australian Open, equaling his best appearance in a Grand Slam tournament.

Shelton improved to 5-2 for the season, losing only to Jakub Mensik in Auckland and eventual Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner in Melbourne.

The 22-year-old is making his second appearance at the Dallas Open. He was beaten in the semifinals on debut last year by Tommy Paul. Shelton compiled eight wins and four losses indoors in 2024. He was a runner-up at the Swiss Indoors in Basel. Shelton has won three Challenger titles on indoor hard courts (all in 2022).

Aleksandar Vukic Preview

Aleksandar Vukic started the season with a win over David Goffin in Brisbane but lost to Grigor Dimitrov in the second round. In his second tournament, Vukic lost to Marcos Giron in Adelaide in the opening round.

But Vukic delivered his best result at the Australian Open with a third-round spot. He defeated Damir Dzumhur and perhaps more impressively Sebastian Korda for his career-best achievement in a Grand Slam. 

Vukic last competed in the Davis Cup this past week where he earned a singles win over Leo Borg of Sweden. The Australian has played once before in Dallas, but lost in the first round of qualifying in 2023 to Zachary Svajda.

A top 10 debut is very much in sight for Ben Shelton this week although he’ll need to win the title and mix of results in other tournaments going his way. That won’t be the ultimate goal for him right now as he looks to defend semifinal points from last year. Vukic can be a tough cookie to grind down and Shelton knows this very well from their lone meeting in Champaign three years ago. Still, Shelton has improved by leaps and bounds since and should overpower the Australian. Give me Shelton in two sets.
