Anastasia Potapova Preview

Anastasia Potapova starts her clay swing in Stuttgart at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. This will be her third appearance at this prestigious WTA 500 event, which is held on indoor clay courts. Potapova was a semifinalist on her debut back in 2023 when she beat Petra Martic, Coco Gauff, and Caroline Garcia before losing to Aryna Sabalenka.

Last year, Potapova returned to the tournament but lost in the round of 16 stage to Marketa Vondrousova. The Russian compiled a 6-5 record on clay, with half of those wins coming from her fourth-round showing at the French Open. This will be Potapova’s eighth tournament of the current season. She is 12-6 for the year and owns one WTA title, which she won at the start of February in Cluj-Napoca.  Since that title win, Potapova has won two of her next five matches. She is coming off a three-set defeat to Kimberly Birrell in Miami.

Clara Tauson Preview

Clara Tauson will be appearing in the Stuttgart main draw for the first time. Last season, Tauson compiled a 9-5 record on clay, in which she reached the Oeiras W100 final on the ITF Tour, and like Potapova, made the second week of the French Open with wins over Jelena Ostapenko and Sofia Kenin.

Tauson has been in great form in the first quarter of 2025, tallying 17 wins from 23 matches. She won her third career title in Auckland in January via retirement and contested her maiden WTA 1000 final in Dubai (lost to Mirra Andreeva). Tauson has reached the semifinal or better in half of the tournaments she has played in. Tauson is coming off a third-round defeat in Miami to Paula Badosa and withdrew from Denmark’s qualifying campaign at this year’s Billie Jean King Cup due to a back injury.

• Potapova and Tauson have played twice on the WTA level. The head-ot-head is locked at 1-1, with both meetings taking place on hard courts. This will be their first match on clay.

Potapova and Tauson both started the season in great form, winning a title on hard courts. Their form in March was, however, nonexistent, with Potapova winning one match on the spring hard courts and Tauson managing just two. But I think that Potapova can meet those lofty ambitions of excelling on the indoor clay in Stuttgart, where she has previously reached the semifinals. Tauson’s form can be a bit of a yo-yo as one moment, she is a world beater and can completely disappear in the next. No doubt that Tauson has outperformed Potapova this year, but after her recent back issue, I’d completely avoid backing the Dane here.
