Alexander Zverev is the top seed in Monte Carlo and received a bye in the first round. Zverev has appeared in the Monte Carlo main draw at least eight times in the past and has reached teh semifinals twice, most recently in 2022. Last year, he was beaten in teh round of 16 by eventual champion Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets.

Zverev was in pole position to become World No. 1 after Jannik Sinner was given a three-month doping suspension, but could not make up the gap to the Italian and losing five of his 11 matches after the Australian Open. He failed to reach a single semifinal of final in that time.

The German will be determined to get things right on clay. He defends a ton of points in some key events coming up, including Rome (where he is defending champion) and the French Open (runner-up).

Matteo Berrettini Preview

Matteo Berrettini won his opening match in Monte Carlo against Argentinian qualifier Mariano Navone. The match took 20 games to decide. Berrettini prevailed 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 48 minutes. In the victory, Berrettini hit 19 winners and 35 unforced errors, including two aces and four double faults. Berrettini landed 64% of first serves in play and won 66% of first serve points (29/44).

The Italian won 36% of second serve points (9/25) and saved four of seven breakpoints. Berrettini won 50% of return points (33/66) and broke Navone five times in the match. He improves to 10-7 for the season. Berrettini has advanced beyond the second round in Monte Carlo only once in four previous visits and faces top seed Zverev looking to turn the tables in their rivalry.

He’s physically imposing on this surface than Berrettini and is more versatile. I trust Zverev more than Berrettini to grind this. He can patiently work in a rally and rush Berrettini into errors.
