Matteo Berrettini deservedly won last season’s Comeback Player of the Year award after a remarkable renaissance following his return from injury.

It was not until April that Berrettini fully made his competitive return to action and registered his first win on the clay in Marrakech. He went on to win that tournament, and reached three more finals, lifting titles in Gstaad and Kitzbuhel.

Berrettini was also crucial to Italy’s successful title defense at the Davis Cup, winning three matches in the September qualifiers and three more rubbers (one in doubles) in the Finals in Malaga.

Berrettini re-entered the Top 40 (World No. 34) but will be unseeded in Brisbane.

Jordan Thompson is ranked 26th in the ATP rankings, which is his personal best, after a sensational season. Thompson is also ranked a career-best ranking of No. 3 in doubles after winning five titles in that discipline including the 2024 US Open men's doubles.

In singles, Thomspon won 35 matches from 60, while lifting his maiden ATP Tour title in Los Cabos in late February, beating Alexander Zverev and Casper Ruud en route.

This is the sixth time he is playing at the Brisbane International and 10 years on from his debut in the qualifying draw. His best result remains a semifinal finish 12 months ago when he downed 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal after saving match points.

Berrettini is one the best servers in men's tennis and possesses a deadly forehand shot. He is comparatively better than Thompson who doesn't have the same ability to hit through the court or dominate with these two shots. That is not to discredit Thomspon who is still a very good offensive player whose skillset is more than just slugging it out from the back of the court. But I expect Berrettini to have the better chances off the return, with one set likely going to a tie-break.
