Canadiens Figuring It Out?

The Canadiens weren’t having the best season, but they have finally figured it out, and they have won five games in a row. Two games ago against the Buffalo Sabres, they won 4-2, and in the last game, it was much of the same as they were able to secure the 4-3 victory. Nick Suzuki had a huge game, scoring a goal and adding three assists. Sam Montembault was in goal, and he saved 33 of the 36 shots that he faced. The Canadiens have scored at least four goals in each of the last five games.

Overall, the Canadiens offense has been in the middle of the road, but the defense has been a major problem most of the season. The Canadiens defense is giving up 3.31 goals per game, which is 27th in the league.  The question for the Canadiens is how much we can trust the last couple of games. Is their offense going to continue to run up the score, or at some point, will the lack of defense really hurt them? Left winger Michael Pezzetta is dealing with a lower-body injury, and he’s questionable.

What an Awful Game for Edmonton

It was an awful game for Edmonton in the last game, and they need to try to bounce back in a big way here. The Oilers were at home against the Anaheim Ducks, and they scored two goals while the defense gave up six. Calvin Pickard wasn’t good, saving only 7 of the 11 shots that he faced. Stuart Skinner came in and saved 14 of the 16 shots that he faced. Two games ago against the Carolina Hurricanes, the defense gave up only one goal, and that defense is going to need to play more like that here.

The Oilers are averaging 3.13 goals while their defense is giving up 2.93 goals per game. The offense is ranked 9th in the league, while the defense is ranked 24th. They are averaging 32.03 shots per game, and they need to pepper the shots on goal again here. Evander Kane is still trying to work his way back from a knee injury, but he’s still out. Stuart Skinner sits with a 20-15-4 record and gives up 2.87 goals per game. He has two shutouts on the season.

Why the Oilers Will Beat the Canadiens

  • The Canadiens have lost 14 of their last 15 Thursday road games.
  • The Oilers have won five of their last six night games following a home loss.
  • The Canadiens have failed to cover the puck line in each of their last four games against Pacific Division opponents.
  • The home team has covered the puck line in four of the last five games between the Canadiens and Oilers.
  • The Oilers have won the second period in seven of their last eight night games at Rogers Place when trailing after the first period.

Montreal Canadiens vs Edmonton Oilers Prediction

This is a strong bounce-back spot for the Oilers. The Oilers are averaging 3.29 goals per game, and don’t be confused about this Canadiens team, the defense has been a major issue all season. The Canadiens are giving up 3.31 goals and they are going to give up even more than that here. The Canadiens offense isn’t going to be as strong as they have been in the last few games. At some point, the Oilers have to get out of their skid, and it’s the perfect game for it to happen. Back the Oilers.

Shane Mickle's Pick: Oiler -1.5
