The Raiders have had their ups and downs in the early-going this year—with more downs than ups if your’e keeping score. Las Vegas opened with a win over the New England Patriots, then rattled off four straight losses versus the Chargers, Commanders, Bears and Colts in their next quartet. In the loss to Indy, Las Vegas gave up 317 total yards, 24 first downs and a scorching 8-of-10 on third-down tries defensively. It was a pretty sloppy game overall, with the Raiders committing six of the game’s 15 total penalties on the way to a 40-6 blowout defeat.
In their latest outing versus the Titans last weekend, the Raiders were able to get back on track a bit. Las Vegas put up points in every quarter, eventually powering out the home win 20-10. QB Geno Smith logged a 17-of-23 line for 174 yards, one score and one pick. Tops in rushing was Ashton Jeanty with 75 yards and a score off 23 totes, while Tre Tucker topped the receivers on 70 yards from five catches. Michael Mayer caught the touchdown among his five catches for 50 yards as well.
Over on the Chiefs’ side, they’re not exactly having the easiest time as defending conference champions. Kansas City lost their first two games versus the Chargers and Eagles, but then beat the New York Giants and Baltimore Ravens over the next pair. Game five was an upset loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, though. In that one the Chiefs managed 476 yards with 7.6 yards per play and 26 first downs on offense but also committed 13 penalties for 109 yards in a sloppy overall effort.
In last Sunday’s matchup versus the Detroit Lions, the Chiefs held a slim three-point lead at the break. Kansas City outscored Detroit 17-7 the rest of the way in a 30-17 victory. QB Patrick Mahomes was 22-of-30 for 257 yards and three touchdowns while Isiah Pacheco carried 12 times for 51 yards as the team’s leading rusher during the win (Mahomes also had a rush score himself). Tops in receiving was Travis Kelce with six grabs for 78 yards, but Hollywood Brown stole the show on four catches, 45 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
I’ll stay with KC. The Chiefs have been a tough team to pin down so far this year, but they’re coming off a win versus a very good Lions team. Kansas City went just 4-of-10 on third downs but gained 355 total yards and 26 first downs with no turnovers along the way. On defense the Chiefs held Detroit to 297 yards total, 5.6 yards per play, 18 first downs and 5-of-11 on third-down tries. The good news is that Kansas City is scoring well these days. They’ve hit 28 or more points in three straight games, going 2-1 in that time.
As for the Raiders, they got a much-needed victory versus a struggling Titans team last weekend. The defense came up big with three takeaways and 3-of-13 allowed on third downs. Las Vegas will have their hands full this weekend, though.
