The Chargers took a 15-10 lead in the third quarter and a 22-17 lead in the fourth, but they allowed a touchdown with five seconds left for the loss. The Chargers were out gained by a total of 458-291, went 5-13 on third downs, and won the turnover battle by a total of 1-0. Trey Lance went 7-15 for 121 yards, Taylor Heinicke went 6-11 for 56 yards, and Justin Herbert went 2-5 for 46 yards in the game. Trey Lance rushed four times for 25 yards, while Tre Harris caught six passes for 85 yards in the loss. The Chargers defense was led by Myles Purchase, who recorded nine total tackles, while Morris-Brash picked up a sack. 

Los Angeles started the 2025 preseason with a 34-7 win over Detroit in the Hall of Fame game and they also won their second game by a score of 27-13 against New Orleans. The Chargers will most likely not play Herbert in this game, so I would expect Trey Lance to get the majority of the work, while Taylor Heinicke may get a few series. 

San Francisco 49ers Betting Preview

The San Francisco 49ers are 1-1 so far in the preseason after they defeated the Raiders by a score of 22-19 last week. San Francisco was tied at three after the first quarter and they managed a touchdown in the second quarter, but still trailed 13-10 at the half. The 49ers tied the game at 13 in the third quarter and they added three field goals in the fourth, two of which came in the final 37 seconds, to get the win. San Francisco out gained LV by a total of 348-271, went 3-11 on third down conversions, and won the turnover battle by a margin of 2-1. Mac Jones went 13-16 for 135 yards and one interception, Carter Bradley went 8-13 for 96 yards, and Brock Purdy went 5-7 for 66 yards in the win. Ke’Shawn Vaughn rushed for 24 yards on nine carries, while Robbie Chosen caught five passes for 92 yards in the game. The SF defense was led by Nick Martin, who recorded six tackles and had one sack, while Gipson, Lucas, and Harris also had a sack. 

San Francisco opened the preseason with a 30-9 loss to Denver in their first game. The 49ers were out gained by a total of 368-203, went just 1-12 on third down conversions, and lost the turnover battle by a margin of 4-0. San Francisco may play Purdy for a series or two, but with the injury to Mac Jones, we will see Sudfeld and Bradley take most of the reps at QB.

Chargers vs 49ers Prediction

San Francisco was a pretty big underdog for a preseason game last week, but they played well and won the game outright. The 49ers are dealing with some injuries, which means Carter Bradley will probably play the majority of the game, with Nate Sudfeld also getting some time. On the other side, the Chargers will most likely let Lance play most of the game, which is great news, as he is a competent quarterback. Take the Chargers to get the win here.
