Rice Owls Betting Preview

The Owls got off to a good start this year but haven’t gotten much good news since then. Rice kicked off the season with a 31-3 blowout win over Houston Christian, then hit the road for a 52-0 blowout-shutout loss to Notre Dame. The next pair were both losses as well; the Owls fell to Western Michigan and Fresno State to drop to just 1-3 on the season through four games.

In game five versus UTSA, the Owls came out of the first quarter with a slim lead but found themselves in the locker room trailing 16-7 at the break. Rice managed a fourth-quarter trip to the end zone but that was it for scoring in a 16-14 loss. Jacurri Brown was 6-of-14 for just 88 yards while also leading the rushing attack on 17 carries, 96 yards and both touchdowns.

East Carolina Pirates Betting Preview

Over on the East Carolina side, they only have four games in the books so far—with mixed results in that quartet. The Pirates opened with a tough matchup versus Alabama on the road, and ended up falling 48-10. East Carolina would lose game two in a close one 27-24 versus App State, but then got their first win 20-17 versus Old Dominion in game four.

East Carolina was able to keep it going in the win column during their last matchup versus North Carolina Central back on September 26. The Pirates jumped out to a 42-3 lead by the end of the first half and ended up winning 42-9 from there. East Carolina QB Emory Williams finished 25-of-36 for 341 yards, three scores and one interception.

Rice vs East Carolina Prediction

I’ll stay with ECU. The Pirates are coming off a pretty routine win over NC Central, bagging 489 yards with 7-of-12 on third downs. On defense East Carolina held the Eagles to just 4-of-17 on third downs and had three takeaways. There are a couple gripes though: namely the 10 penalties for 120 yards and the four turnovers.

As for Rice, they were shut down by a pretty decent UTSA team last weekend. The owls managed just 13 first downs, 232 yards and a 2-of-13 success rate on third-down tries. The Owls defense wasn’t too bad though, giving up just 6-of-16 on third downs alongside a couple of takeaways. Rice has given up 28 or more points in three of the last four games (all losses).

Andrew Jett's Pick: East Carolina Pirates -9.5
