Winthrop Eagles Betting Preview
Winthrop has had a couple of pretty choppy runs so far this year, but otherwise, they’re doing fairly well. The Eagles opened the year on a 9-3 stretch over their first 12 outings, taking losses to only Virginia Tech, Georgia Southern, and Louisville. A 4-6 run came over the next 10 outings, featuring losses to Florida State, Indiana, Radford, Gardner-Webb, UNC Asheville, and High Point. Since then Winthrop is a nice 6-1 with a lone loss to High Point. Otherwise, it’s been wins over Presbyterian, Gardner-Webb, Charleston Southern, USC Upstate, Radford, and Presbyterian in succession, giving the Eagles a 19-10 overall run through 29 games so far.Â
In the Presbyterian road rematch last Wednesday, the Eagles came out of the locker room with a 46-37 edge. Winthrop was outscored 40-35 the rest of the way but held on for an 81-77 win in the end. Tops in scoring was KJ Doucet with 24 points, six rebounds, and three assists. Kelton Talford managed to double up with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Kasen Harrison added 13 points with five assists and one rebound in 34 minutes of work.Â
Longwood Lancers Betting Preview
Over on the Longwood side, they weren’t doing too badly back in late January but they’ve hit the skids since then. The Lancers kicked things off with a nice 11-3 run with losses to only McNeese State, Kansas State, and North Carolina Central in that 14-game stretch. A 5-3 run came next with losses to SMU, Presbyterian, and Winthrop mixed among wins over Charleston Southern, UNC Asheville, High Point, Radford, and USC Upstate. Since then it’s been a lone win over Gardner-Webb among losses to Gardner-Webb, Charleston Southern, Radford, High Point, Presbyterian, and UNC Asheville. That gives the Lancers a 17-12 overall run so far.Â
Matched up against UNC Asheville in a road rematch on Saturday, the Lancers held a slim 41-40 edge in the locker room. Longwood was outpaced 47-41 the rest of the way, however, and ended up falling 87-82 in the end. Johan Nziemi led the team with 19 points, six boards and two assists off the bench, while Colby Garland doubled up on 17 points, 11 assists, and four rebounds. Michael Christmas chipped in with 13 points and five rebounds as well.Â

Winthrop vs Longwood PredictionÂ
I’ll just stay with Winthrop here. We should have an interesting matchup, though. The Eagles are coming off a well-rounded win over a struggling Presbyterian team, hitting 53.6 percent from the field with a 41-24 rebounding advantage. The only major blemish in the road victory was Winthrop’s 17 turnovers for 18 Hose points. Winthrop has won six of their last seven games now, with 76 or more points in each victory.Â
These teams last saw each other back on January 11 in a 95-76 home win for the Eagles. Winthrop got off to a great start in that one and ended up shooting 56.7 percent from the field with a 38-29 rebounding advantage. The turnovers (14 for 11 points) were again a source of trouble though, so I’d like to see some better ball control in the rematch.Â
