Utah Valley Wolverines Betting Preview

The Wolverines weren’t looking so good back in mid-December but since then they’ve been on a great run. Utah Valley won just five of their first 11 games though, falling to North Dakota, Samford, North Dakota State, Stanford, James Madison, and Jacksonville State in that time. A win streak came next versus Idaho State, Weber State, Bethesda U, Abilene Christian, Grand Canyon, Cal Baptist, Texas Arlington, Utah Tech, Cal Baptist, and Seattle U. Following a loss to Grand Canyon, the Wolverines have since dispatched Texas Arlington, Tarleton State, and Southern Utah. That gives the Wolverines an 18-7 overall record through their first 25 games of the 2024-25 campaign.

In the Saturday matchup with Southern Utah, the Wolverines were down by one point heading into the second half. Utah Valley got on a 38-35 run from there though, taking the comeback win 70-68. Both Carter Welling (nine rebounds; three steals; three blocks) and Tanner Toolson (two rebounds; two assists) had a team-high 17 points each. Dominick Nelson chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds as well.

Utah Tech Trailblazers Betting Preview

Over on the Utah Tech side, they’ve really only got one decent run this year record-wise. The Trailblazers fell in 10 of their first 12 games, taking out only Bethesda University and Denver during that time. Utah Tech would go on a 4-1 stretch in the next five, falling to Florida International amid wins over Whittier, South Dakota, Texas Arlington, and Tarleton State otherwise. Since then it’s been an eight-game losing streak versus Seattle U, Utah Valley, Grand Canyon, Tarleton State, Texas Arlington, Abilene Christian, Southern Utah, and Cal Baptist. In total that makes a 6-19 record through 25 games so far for the Trailblazers.

Matched up against Cal Baptist on Saturday, the Trailblazers had a 45-34 deficit going into the second half. Utah Tech came back with a 49-41 run from there but it wasn’t enough in an 86-83 loss in the end. Madiba Owona led the team with 18 points and three rebounds. Noa Gonsalves added 14 points with six boards and two assists, while Justin Bieker came off the bench for 15 points and three boards with two steals in 30 minutes of work.

Why the Utah Tech Trailblazers will win

  • The home team has won each of the last three games between Utah Valley and Utah Tech.
  • Utah Valley has lost the first half in 16 of its last 19 road games against Conference opponents.

Why the Utah Valley Wolverines will win

  • Utah Tech has lost each of its last eight games against the Western Athletic Conference.
  • Utah Valley has won 13 of its last 14 games against non-AP-ranked opponents.

Utah Valley vs Utah Tech Prediction

I’ll lean toward Utah Valley. The Wolverines are coming off a close road escape versus Southern Utah though, notching 14 missed free throws out of 34 attempts (58.8 percent) and a 41-37 rebounding deficit along the way. Still, it goes down as a win which gives Utah Valley a 13-1 record since December 14. They’ve been at 70 points or above in all but three of those games as well.

When these teams last met up back on January 19, the Wolverines took a 96-80 home win. Both teams shot well (above 55 percent) in that one, and both committed 13 turnovers. Utah Valley had the rebounding edge 35-19 though, and hit 24 of their 31 free throws (77.4 percent) I’d like to see a more routine win from the Wolverines this time, but all things considered they should be okay.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Utah Valley Wolverines -7.5
