Saint Joseph’s Hawks Betting Preview

The Hawks have had something of an up-and-down year so far. There have been some good stretches, and also a few rough losing runs here and there. St. Joseph’s kicked things off on a 6-4 record with losses to Central Connecticut, Texas, Princeton, and Charleston mixed among wins over Navy, Villanova, Penn, Texas Tech, Coppin State, and La Salle. After a four-game win streak over American University, Virginia Tech, Delaware State, and UMass, the Hawks hit a 1-3 run. The lone win in that time was versus Loyola Chicago. Otherwise, it was losses to Saint Louis, Duquesne, and VCU for an 11-7 overall record through the first 18 games of the year.

In the VCU matchup on Friday, the Hawks came out of the break looking at a 38-32 deficit. St. Joseph’s didn’t end up getting any closer than that on a 40-37 second half and took the loss 78-69. Xzayvier Brown led the team with 22 points, seven boards, and five assists. Rasheer Fleming doubled up on 16 points and 14 boards, while Erik Reynolds chipped in 12 points with three rebounds. Derek Simpson added 11 points with three rebounds as well.

Davidson Wildcats Betting Preview

Over on the Davidson side, they avoided losing consecutive games until this past week. The Wildcats have been quite the consistent team outside of that, however. Davidson beat William Peace, Bowling Green, East Tennessee State, and VMI out of the gate before losses to Arizona and Gonzaga (with a win over Providence) in the next trio of outings. A 7-2 stretch ensued with losses to Temple and George Mason among wins over Charleston Southern, Charlotte, Detroit, Bethune Cookman, Eastern Michigan, Duquesne, and Fordham. Since then it’s been a pair of defeats at the hands of La Salle and Rhode Island for a 12-6 record through 18 games.

Matched up against Rhode Island in the Saturday outing, the Wildcats were down by three points at halftime. Davidson got slightly better from there on a 43-42 run but ended up losing a tough one 92-90 in the end. Leading the team in scoring was Reed Bailey with 30 points, 11 assists, and nine boards in a near triple-double. Bobby Durkin also had a nice statistical game with 28 points and eight rebounds in 37 minutes of work on the floor.

Why the Davidson Wildcats will win

  • Davidson has won each of its last 10 games at John M. Belk Arena.
  • Saint Joseph’s has lost eight of its last nine road night games against Conference opponents.
  • Davidson has won the first half in eight of its last 10 games at John M. Belk Arena against non-AP-ranked opponents.

Why the Saint Joseph’s Hawks will win

  • Davidson has lost each of its last four night games against Conference opponents.
  • Davidson has lost the first half in four of its last five games against the Atlantic 10 Conference at John M. Belk Arena.

St. Joseph’s vs Davidson Prediction

I’ll lean toward Davidson. The Wildcats took a tough loss on the road versus a pretty good Rhode Island team in their last outing, but they didn’t play too badly. Davidson shot a nice 56.7 percent from the field with a 33-28 rebounding edge in that one, but also coughed up 10 turnovers for 15 points and gave up 53.7 percent shooting to the Rams. Still, the 90 points continue a stretch of at least 74 points in four straight games (a 2-2 run) for Davidson.

As for Saint Joseph’s, they’ve been quite permissive to opposing offenses lately, with 72 or more points surrendered in four of the last five games (a 2-3 stretch). Davidson should have enough room to score and roll right through this one if all goes well.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Davidson Wildcats -1
