A summary that ties it all together and produces a favorable betting outcome for the South Carolina State vs Louisville game
South Carolina took a big step forward in 2024-25, but couldn’t break through to the next level. The Bulldogs went 20-13 overall with an 11-3 stretch in the MEAC, which would give them regular-season conference co-championship honors alongside Norfolk State. The non-conference slate was pretty rough, as South Carolina State had some tricky matchups like South Carolina, Xavier and Georgia on the slate. The Bulldogs would hit a nine-game win streak heading into the MEAC Tournament though, and took out Coppin State and NC Central in the first two rounds. In the championship game versus Norfolk State however, South Carolina State took a heartbreaking loss 66-65 to finish off their season for good.
Heading into the 2025-26 campaign, the Bulldogs will lose three of their five starters in head coach Erik Martin’s fourth year at the helm. South Carolina State lost some big names like Drayton Jones, Mitchell Taylor and Wilson Dubinsky, but more importantly they’ve lost each of their top five scorers from a season ago. The leading scorer to return is Colin McKenzie, who put up a modest 5.8 PPG last season but started 17 games. He’ll be joined by Florian Tenebay (4.0 PPG), who also got decent starting time last year with 18 games under his proverbial belt.
Over on the Cardinals’ side, they’re coming off a successful season with a quick finish last year. Louisville went a nice 27-8 overall in 2024-25 with an 18-2 record in a crowded ACC. That result put the Cards behind only Duke in the standings and tied them with Clemson. Louisville did have one bad 1-4 run in early December (with three losses to ranked teams) but overall they were very consistent in the win column. The Cardinals made it to the ACC Tournament Championship Game where they lost to Duke 73-62. In the First Round of the NCAA Tournament, the Cardinals had an early exit with an 89-75 loss to Creighton.
This year Louisville is looking very good on paper in head coach Pat Kelsey’s second season. They’ve had some retooling to do though, as plenty of talent has moved on. Chief among them are names like Terrance Edwards (who led Louisville in scoring and played in all 35 games), Chucky Hepburn (ACC Defensive Player of the Year with a league-high 82 steals) and James Scott (13.4 PPG; 6.1 RPG). The good news is that the Cards reloaded well with names like Mikel Brown, who is a near-certainty to be one-and-done after this season.
Louisville has won each of its last 13 night games against non-AP-ranked opponents.
South Carolina State has lost 30 of its last 38 night games against non-Conference opponents.
South Carolina State has won each of its last 11 night games against non-AP-ranked opponents.
Louisville has lost the first half in six of its last seven games against non-Conference opponents.
Louisville ranked T2nd for free throw percentage (87.5%) in last season’s NCAA Tournament.
Louisville ranked 3rd for fast break points per game (15.0) in last season’s NCAA Tournament.
South Carolina State ranked T7th among Division 1 teams for steals per game last season (9.5).
South Carolina State ranked 7th among Division 1 teams for opponent three-point field goals made per game last season (5.6).
I’m going to stay with Louisville. The Cardinals are pretty stacked with talent this season and should go a long way. They’ve got a great backcourt, a pretty good front court and some solid reserves off the bench. I like the Cardinals to get right to work under Kelsey’s leadership.
As for South Carolina State, their roster got torpedoed pretty badly in the offseason as the team lost their top five scorers. The good news is that this team has some very nice depth and should be able to wear down a lot of squads. For now though, I don’t think they’ll be able to keep a cover pace on Louisville in the end.
