The Cougars would beat Western Illinois, Lindenwood, Eastern Illinois, Tennessee Tech, and Tennessee State in the next five before a 2-2 run. Those wins were over Southern Indiana and Morehead State, in between losses to TN-Martin and Lindenwood. Since then it’s been a 5-1 run with a lone loss to TN-Martin amid wins over Western Illinois, Eastern Illinois, Tennessee Tech, Tennessee State, and Morehead State. That gives the Cougars a 19-9 overall run this year through 28 games. 

In the road rematch versus Morehead State on Thursday, the Cougars came out of the gate with a 35-30 advantage in the first half. SIU Edwardsville hit a 45-32 run the rest of the way and took the victory 80-62. Ray’Sean Taylor led the team with 33 points with seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Kyle Thomas added 12 points with four rebounds and one assist, while Myles Thompson came off the bench for 11 points and four boards in 18 minutes of work.

Over on the Southern Indiana side, they’ve got a couple of good runs this year but overall they’re struggling. The Eagles kicked off on a 6-5 run though, beating Bellarmine, South Dakota, Indiana State, East-West U, Shawnee State, and Tennessee State. After losses to TN-Martin, Morehead State, Tennessee Tech, Southeast Missouri State, and Little Rock, the Eagles hit a 3-1 run with a lone loss to SIU Edwardsville among wins versus Lindenwood, Western Illinois, and Eastern Illinois. Since then it’s been a losing streak versus Morehead State, Tennessee Tech, Little Rock, Southeast Missouri State, Western Illinois, Lindenwood, and Eastern Illinois. That gives Southern Indiana a 9-18 record through 27 games this year. 

In the Eastern Illinois matchup back on Thursday, the Eagles posted a 30-27 deficit in the first half. Southern Indiana didn’t end up getting any closer on a 33-27 second and lost the game 63-54 at home. Leading the scoring in the losing effort was Damoni Harrison with his 20 points and four rebounds. Stephen Olowoniyi added 16 points with five rebounds and three blocks. Ryan Hall chipped in seven bench points with four rebounds.

I’ll stick with SIU Edwardsville. The Cougars didn’t have too many issues in their latest win over Morehead State despite a minor 33-30 rebounding deficit. SIU Edwardsville shot 52 percent from the field in that one with 20-of-24 (83.3 percent) from the line and just eight turnovers. That gives SIU Edwardsville 71 or more points in four straight games, a 3-1 run. 

These teams last saw each other back on January 23 in an 82-76 home win for the Cougars. SIU Edwardsville scored 14 points off 12 Eagles turnovers in that one but didn’t play super well otherwise—especially on defense. This road rematch is going to take a sharper effort in order to cover, but I think SIU Edwardsville will pull it off.
