Samford Bulldogs Betting Preview
The Bulldogs have been quite the consistent team so far this season. They’re yet to lose consecutive games. Samford opened on a 4-2 stretch with losses to Cornell and Michigan State among wins over Mississippi College, Rhodes, North Alabama, and Texas Southern. Wins over North Dakota State, Utah Valley, West Georgia, South Carolina State, and Austin Peay in succession came next before a loss to Arizona. The Bulldogs would then take out Alabama A&M, the Citadel, Western Carolina, VMI, UNC Greensboro, and Mercer before falling to East Tennessee State for a 15-4 overall record through the first 19 outings of the season so far.
In the East Tennessee State matchup on Saturday, the Bulldogs came out of the gate with a 29-29 tie by halftime. Samford lost pace from there, however, falling behind on a 36-31 run on the way to a 65-60 defeat in the end. Leading team scorer Rylan Jones put up 12 points with four assists and one rebound. Collin Holloway was the only other double-digit scorer, notching 10 points with 10 rebounds and five turnovers for a double-double.
Chattanooga Mocs Betting Preview
Over on the Chattanooga side, their season didn’t start out so great, but the Mocs quickly found their form. It’s been a fairly shaky run over the last seven games, though. Chattanooga fell to USC, Saint Mary’s, and Austin Peay in their first trio, then beat Morehead State, Southeast Missouri State, Johnson University TN, Tennessee State, and Bryant in the next five. A 3-3 stretch ensued with losses to Lipscomb, Indiana, and Mercer around wins versus Evansville, Alabama A&M, and Tennessee Wesleyan. Since then it’s been a 4-1 record with wins over the Citadel, VMI, Wofford, and Furman amid a lone loss to UNC Greensboro. The Mocs now sit at 12-7 overall after 19 games on the year.
Matched up against Furman on Saturday, the Mocs came out of the locker room with a 34-27 deficit. Chattanooga got better from there, however, powering out a 75-71 win after a 48-37 advantage in the second half. Leading the team in scoring were Frank Champion (nine rebounds; three assists), Honor Huff (three rebounds; three assists), and Trey Bonham (two assists; three steals), each with 16 points in the victory.
Why the Chattanooga Mocs will win
- Chattanooga has won each of its last five night games at McKenzie Arena following a road win.
- Chattanooga has won the first half in seven of its last eight home games against Samford.
Why the Samford Bulldogs will win
- Samford has won nine of its last 10 games against Conference opponents.
Samford vs Chattanooga Prediction
I’ll probably stay with Chattanooga here, but this should be a pretty fun matchup regardless. The Mocs took care of a talented Furman team in a road matchup this past weekend, posting 44.2 percent shooting with a 38-27 rebounding edge and 89.3 percent (25-of-28) from the line. The 14 turnovers (for 20 Paladins points) were just about the only blemish. Chattanooga has been scoring quite well so far this year overall, and they’ve got 75 or more points in six straight games (a 4-2 run).
As for Samford, they shot just 37.7 percent from the field with 16 turnovers in their loss to East Tennessee State. It was an uncharacteristic outing for the Bulldogs, who had scored 75 or more points in six straight wins prior to that. I like a bounce-back scoring performance in this one, with the Mocs powering it out in the end. It should be a good game to watch.
