The Purple Eagles took a step backward in the win column last year following a .500 season (16-16) in 2023-24. Niagara would follow that up with a pretty rough 11-20 run overall, posting a 6-14 stretch in the MAAC. That effort would put the Purple Eagles ahead of only Canisius (3-17) in the conference standings. Niagara had a 1-5 stretch early in the year (with all losses coming on the road) then lost six of seven games in January and February. To finish off the season, the Purple Eagles hit another rough stretch at 1-6, falling to Mount St. Mary’s, Siena, Marist, Iona, Manhattan and Rider along the way.
Moving ahead to 2025-26, the Purple Eagles get head coach Greg Paulus back for his seventh year at the helm. He’ll have just one starter returning from last year’s team so there will be plenty of new faces on the court. Among those are Reggie Prudhomme (9.5 PPG at Division II Cameron), Trenton Walters (10.7 PPG at Indian Hills Community College) and Brian Griffith (17.1 PPG at Coffeyville Community College).
Over on the Dukes’ side, they also took a step back in 2024-25. Duquesne managed to go just 13-19 overall, a far cry from their 25-12 run in 2023-24. Last year the Dukes went a tepid 8-10 in the Atlantic 10 games, putting the team ahead of Rhode Island, UMass, Davidson, Richmond, La Salle and Fordham in the standings. Duquesne had a rough stretch in January and February, winning just two of nine games. Following a 2-2 run to finish off the regular season, Duquesne ended their campaign with a March 13 loss to St. Bonaventure 64-59 in the opening game of the A-10 Tournament.
This year Duquesne will be in the second season of head coach Dru Joyce’s tenure. He’ll get 10 returning players and eight newcomers on his roster, a diverse group that’s pretty intriguing on paper. Among them are four Division I transfers who have combined for 1,650 points and 750 rebounds in their careers already. The returning players are headlined by guard Cam Crawford, who notched 8.6 PPG a season ago. He made 22 starts last year after transferring in from Marshall. Jakub Necas is another big returning name after 21 starts and 6.0 PPG. Necas finished fourth with 20 blocks and added 23 steals.
Niagara has lost six of its last seven games against non-AP-ranked opponents.
Duquesne has won three of its last four games against non-Conference opponents.
Duquesne has won the first half in four of its last five games against non-AP-ranked opponents.
Duquesne has lost each of its last three games against non-AP-ranked opponents.
Niagara has won three of its last four games against non-Conference opponents.
Matchup/League Facts
Duquesne ranked 30th among Division 1 teams for opponent field goals made per game last season (22.8).
Duquesne ranked 49th among Division 1 teams for opponent points per game last season (67.3).
I’m going to stay with Duquesne. The Dukes are coming off a pretty ugly season last year but things are looking up given the amount of returning talent. Duquesne should have some pretty good guard play right off the bat, and their defense should be strong as well. The team will need a bit of luck with injuries and the like, but there’s no reason they can’t improve on last year’s finish.
As for Niagara, they’ve got plenty of unproven talent on their roster but there are lots of reasons to think that the program can get back to the middle of the pack in the MAAC. The team looks to be more aggressive up front, which should help in rebounding and second-chance opportunities. For now though, I don’t think they’ll keep a relative pace on the Dukes.
