Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers Betting Preview

The Mountaineers have had mixed results in the record column so far this year, but they’ve been able to keep their heads above the .500 mark. Mount St. Mary’s went 11-5 over their first 16 games, taking out Notre Dame MD, Bucknell, St. Francis PA, Delaware State, Howard, Fairfield, LIU, Miami, Niagara, Manhattan, and Sacred Heart in that time. After a four-game losing streak versus Rider, Quinnipiac, Siena, and Manhattan, the Mountaineers have since gone 3-1. The loss at that time was versus Iona. Otherwise, it was wins over Merrimack, Saint Peter’s, and Niagara, giving the Mountaineers a 14-10 overall run through 24 games so far.

In the Niagara game on Friday, the Mountaineers came out of the first half with a 41-34 lead. Mount St. Mary’s was outscored the rest of the way 49-43 but managed to hang on for a dramatic one-point win 84-83. Leading the team in scoring was Dallas Hobbs with 21 points, three rebounds, and three assists. Both Jedy Cordilia (seven rebounds) and Carmelo Pacheco added 13 points apiece as well.

Canisius Golden Griffins Betting Preview

Over on the Canisius side, they’ve had a pretty miserable year so far with wins coming few and far between. The Griffins opened the season on a rough 14-game losing streak that lasted from November 4 to January 12. A 2-2 run came next with wins over Rider and Fairfield bookending losses to Saint Peter’s and Iona. Since then it’s been six more losses for Canisius. Those have come versus Sacred Heart, Marist, Niagara, Quinnipiac, Merrimack, and Niagara, which gives the Golden Griffins a 2-22 record across their first 24 outings of the year.

Matched up against Niagara in the Wednesday game, the Griffins came out of the gate with a 36-31 deficit. Canisius closed on a 35-29 run and took the loss in the end 71-60. Gianni Thompson was the top team scorer in the losing effort with 17 points and one rebound. Paul McMillan added 16 points with five rebounds and a pair of assists. Tops off the bench in the defeat was Cam Palesse, who notched a double-double on 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Why the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers will win

  • Canisius has lost each of its last seven day games at Koessler Athletic Center against non-AP-ranked opponents.
  • Mount St. Mary’s has won each of its last six Sunday games.
  • The road team has won the first half in six of Mount St. Mary’s’ last seven games.

Mount St. Mary’s vs Canisius Prediction

I’ll stay with Mount St. Mary’s. I’m not touching this one in reality, though; there’s not a lot to like about it outside of being a very winnable game for the Mountaineers. They’re coming off a nice road win over Niagara (outside of a rough second half), totaling 57.4 percent shooting from the field and a 34-25 rebounding advantage. The major blemish, however, was the 16 turnovers for 17 Eagles points. That said, it’s been a pretty good four-game stretch for the Mountaineers. They’re 3-1 in that time with 79 or more points in two of the three wins.

As for Canisius, they’re not scoring well during this six-game losing streak. The Griffins have fewer than 64 points in four of their last five outings and probably won’t score too well here either. Mount St. Mary’s should dominate this one from wire to wire if they play well.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers -5.5
