Merrimack Warriors Betting Preview

The Warriors had a pretty rough go of things early on this year, but they’ve looked a lot better since mid-December. Merrimack lost to VCU, Princeton, Rutgers, Butler, UMass Lowell, and UTSA during a limp 1-6 start, but then beat Troy, Canisius, Niagara, and Boston U in the next four. A 3-3 stretch came next with wins over Fairfield, Sacred Heart, and Manhattan among losses to Stanford, Saint Mary’s, and Quinnipiac. Since then it’s been a 6-1 record for the Warriors with a lone loss to Mount St. Mary’s. The wins otherwise have come courtesy of Siena, Saint Peter’s, Fairfield, Rider, Niagara and Canisius. That gives the Warriors a 14-10 overall run through their first 24 games this year.

In the Canisius matchup last weekend, the Warriors were up 31-23 by the break. Merrimack hit a 38-28 run the rest of the way, cruising to the victory 69-51 in the end. Adam Clark led the team with 17 points with three rebounds, three assists, and four steals. Sean Trumper added 12 points with six boards and three assists, while Bryan Etumnu doubled up with his 10 points, 10 boards, and three blocks in 26 minutes of work on the floor.

Manhattan Jaspers Betting Preview

Over on the Manhattan side, they’ve been quite the choppy team so far this year but they’ve also been able to keep their heads above the .500 mark overall in the record column. The Jaspers went 4-5 in their first nine games with losses to Maryland, Fairleigh Dickinson, Virginia, Le Moyne, and Marist. A 4-4 run came next with wins over Wagner, Presbyterian, Rider, and Niagara among losses to Siena, Mount St. Mary’s, Merrimack, and Fairfield. Since then it’s been a 3-1 stretch with a lone loss to Sacred Heart among wins over Mount St. Mary’s, Iona, and Saint Peter’s. That gives the Jaspers a spotty 11-10 record through 21 games this season.

Matched up against Saint Peter’s back on Saturday, the Jaspers came into the locker room with a 40-35 deficit. Manhattan fought back to force overtime and eventually took the dramatic win 84-83 in the end. Devin Dinkins led the team with 26 points, two rebounds and two assists in 35 minutes off the bench. Shaquil Bender added 17 points with three rebounds, two steals and two assists. Will Snydor had 16 points with eight rebounds and six assists as well.

Why the Manhattan Jaspers will win

  • Manhattan has won three of its last four games.
  • Manhattan has won the first half in four of its last five home night games against the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Why the Merrimack Warriors will win

  • Manhattan has lost seven of its last eight night games following an overtime win.
  • Merrimack has won six of its last seven games against the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Merrimack vs Manhattan Prediction

I’ll stay with Merrimack. The Warriors are playing well these days and coming off a nice win over a struggling Canisius team. In that one Merrimack shot 49 percent from the field with a 33-29 rebounding edge and 12 points off 16 Griffins turnovers. The Warriors also held Canisius to just 39.2 percent shooting on the other side during a solid defensive performance. Merrimack has been below 70 points in three straight games now, but they’ve also held opponents below 65 points in each of those.

Back on January 12 when these teams last met, Merrimack pulled off a 69-62 win at home. It was a sloppy game overall (33 total turnovers) but both teams shot well. I like Manhattan to put up a decent fight in the home rematch, but I think the Warriors power it out in the end.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Merrimack Warriors -2.5
