The Monarchs hit a 4-5 stretch in the next nine, losing to James Madison, Georgia Southern, Troy, Texas State and LA-Monroe. The wins otherwise were against Coastal Carolina, App State, Arkansas State and Ohio, giving the Monarchs an 8-17 record in 25 games this year.

In the Ohio matchup on Saturday the Monarchs were up 40-35 heading into the second half. Old Dominion kept it going from there on a 38-37 run and ended up powering out the victory 78-72 as the game completed. KC Shaw was tops on 17 points with five rebounds and Caelum Swanton-Rodger had 14 points with seven rebounds and two assists in the winning effort.

I’ll lean toward Marshall. The Herd need to get past a demoralizing loss to a very good Miami-OH team this past weekend, though. In that one Marshall shot a tepid 40 percent from the field and 58.8 percent (10-of-17) from the free throw line alongside a 46-38 deficit on points in the paint. The Herd gave up 55.9 percent shooting on defense as well. Marshall is 4-2 in their last six games and they’ve scored 70 or more points in five of those outings.

As for ODU, they got a much-needed win over a middling Ohio team this past Saturday. The Monarchs shot 45.2 percent from the field in that one with 88.9 percent (16-of-18) from the line and just six turnovers. Old Dominion has still lost three of the last five though, and they’ve given up 71 or more points in all of those games.
