Jackson State Tigers Betting Preview
The Tigers opened the 2024-25 season on a rough stretch of losses, but since the calendar flipped to the new year they’ve played much better. Jackson State fell to Houston, High Point, Xavier, Vanderbilt, Western Kentucky, Kentucky, Lipscomb, Saint Louis, Arkansas State, Iowa State, UTEP, Akron, and Cal Baptist in their first 13 outings. The next four were wins over Alcorn State, Alabama State, Alabama A&M, and Prairie View A&M, though. Jackson State would go 1-2 in the next three outings, with losses to Texas Southern and Florida A&M sandwiched around a lone win over Bethune-Cookman. The result was a 5-15 record through 20 games.Â
In their game versus Grambling on Saturday, the Tigers went into the break sporting a 37-33 advantage. Jackson State kept it up in the second half on a 28-17 run and took the eventual win 65-50 in the end. Leading the team in scoring along the way was Daeshun Ruffin with 20 points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Romelle Mansel (eight rebounds; four assists), Shannon Grant (five rebounds; two assists), and Keiveon Hunt (two rebounds; two assists) each chipped in 10 points in starting roles as well.Â
Southern Jaguars Betting Preview
Over on the Jags’ side, they’ve been a mixed bag this year but have still managed to keep their heads moving .500 as of late. Southern lost four of their first five outings versus South Dakota, Iowa, East Texas A&M, and Texas A&M, then took out Champion Christian, LA Tech, Tulsa, and Lindsey Wilson College in the next four. Losses to Ole Miss, Loyola Marymount, USC, and Nebraska came next, then a win streak. The Jaguars took out Texas Southern, Prairie View, Florida A&M, Bethune-Cookman, Grambling, AR-Pine Bluff, and MS Valley State over the next seven outings, giving them a 12-8 record through the first 20 games of the season.Â
Matched up against Alcorn State on Saturday, the Jaguars were trailing by two points in the locker room. In the second half Southern got better on a 37-30 run, however, and eventually powered out the comeback win 74-69. Cam Amboree was the leading scorer with 13 points and five assists off the bench. DeMariee Joens also had a nice bench performance in the victory, posting a double-double of 12 points with 11 rebounds and two blocks in just 17 minutes of action on the floor.Â

Jackson State vs Southern PredictionÂ
I’ll lean toward Southern. The Jaguars initially had some issues with a struggling Alcorn State team in their last outing but everything worked out well in the end. Southern ended up shooting a spotty 40.4 percent from the floor though, and lost the rebounding battle 33-30 in the five-point victory. The big swing came from 16 points off 15 Alcorn State turnovers, not to mention a reasonable 41.4 percent shooting allowed. Regardless, the win streak remains intact at eight games, with 69 or more points in five of the last seven.Â
As for Jackson State, they’re looking pretty good lately with a 6-2 run over their last eight outings. The Tigers have been below 66 points in consecutive games though, so it may be tough for them to keep pace in a road matchup here.Â
