Duke Blue Devils Betting Preview

The Blue Devils have had a pretty great run overall, with only a few losses here and there. Duke opened on a 4-2 stretch with defeats thanks to only Kentucky and Kansas. A win streak followed as the Devils took out Seattle U, Auburn, Louisville, Incarnate Word, George Mason, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, SMU, Pitt, Notre Dame, Miami, Boston College, Wake Forest, NC State, North Carolina, and Syracuse. A loss to Clemson came on February 8, then Duke bounced back with another win over California. Through the 24-game mark this year, the Blue Devils were sitting at a nice 21-3 overall.

In their weekend matchup with Stanford, Duke was up by a 49-34 score by halftime. The Blue Devils kept it up in the second half, posting a 57-36 run the rest of the way during a 106-70 blowout victory. Tyrese Proctor was the team’s leading scorer with 23 points, four assists, and two rebounds. Cooper Flagg added 19 points with six assists and five rebounds as well.

Virginia Cavaliers Betting Preview

Over on the Virginia side, they’ve had some good stretches and some not-so-good stretches in their season so far. The Cavs opened with a 5-2 run featuring losses to Tennessee and St. John’s. A 3-3 stretch came next with losses to Florida, SMU, and Memphis amid wins over Bethune-Cookman, NC State, and American University. Next came a losing streak versus Louisville, Cal, Stanford, SMU, and Louisville again. Over the next six games, Virginia went 4-2. The two losses were versus Notre Dame and Virginia Tech. Otherwise, it was wins over Boston College, Miami, Pitt, and Georgia Tech, giving the Cavs a 12-12 record over 24 games this year.

Back on Saturday versus Virginia Tech, the Cavaliers were up by seven points going into the second half. Virginia was outscored 37-33 the rest of the way but held on for a nice road win in the end 73-70. Isaac McKneely led the team on his 22 points with three rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Anthony Robinson came off the bench for 15 points with seven boards in 18 minutes, and Dai Dai Ames chipped in with 11 points and five assists in 36 minutes of work.

Why the Virginia Cavaliers will win

  • The home team has won five of Duke’s last six games.

Why the Duke Blue Devils will win

  • Duke has won each of its last 12 games following a home win.
  • Virginia has lost each of its last six night games against AP-ranked opponents.
  • Virginia has lost the first half in each of its last five games against Top 10 AP-ranked opponents.

Duke vs Virginia Prediction

I’m going to stay with Duke, but the line’s thick enough that you could make a case the other way. The Blue Devils didn’t have any issues at all with a pretty decent Stanford team over the weekend. Duke shot a blistering 62.5 percent from the field in that one with 14-of-29 (48.3 percent) from 3-point range and 12-of-13 (92.3 percent) from the line. The 37-29 rebounding edge helped, as did the 23 team assists and 14 points off 10 Cardinal turnovers. Duke has now lost just one game since November 26 (a 77-71 road outcome versus Clemson on February 8), and they’re scoring quite well during this dominant run.

As for Virginia, they’ve now won three straight and five of the last seven games. The Cavaliers have scored 73 or more points in five straight games as well—a 4-1 run during that time. Going up against Duke is going to be the biggest challenge the Cavs will face for the rest of the year however, and I don’t think they’ll measure up—even at home. Cover-wise it seems like a coin-flip proposition, though.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Duke Blue Devils -14.5
