DePaul Blue Demons Betting Preview

DePaul had a great start to the season back in November, but since then it’s been a struggle. The Blue Demons went 7-0 to start things off, then fell to Texas Tech, Providence, St. John’s, and Northwestern in the next six. After losses to UConn, Villanova, Seton Hall, Xavier, and Marquette, DePaul got a win over Georgetown before falling versus Creighton, Butler, and UConn. Another win over Seton Hall came next, then losses to Villanova, Marquette, Xavier, St. John’s, Butler, and Creighton. That gives the Blue Demons an 11-18 overall run across the first 29 games of their campaign.

In the Creighton game on Wednesday, the Blue Demons opened up the game on a 36-32 deficit. DePaul finished off the game with a 39-33 run, failing to get closer in a 75-65 road loss. Isaiah Rivera topped the team with 18 points, eight rebounds, and two assists. CJ Gunn added 14 points with six rebounds, one assist, and one steal, while Layden Blocker chipped in 11 points with two assists and one steal in 29 minutes of work.

Providence Friars Betting Preview

Over on the Friars’ side, they’ve been similarly deficient in the win column so far this year during a bumpy run. Providence went 7-4 over their first 11 outings, then fell to St. Bonaventure, St. John’s, Marquette, and UConn before wins over Butler and Seton Hall. The Friars lost to Creighton and Villanova in the next pair then beat Georgetown and Seton Hall again. It’s been a 1-7 run since then with a lone victory over Villanova. The losses otherwise have been versus St. John’s, Creighton, Butler, Xavier, Georgetown, Marquette, and UConn, giving the Friars a 12-17 overall record across 29 games so far this year.

In the UConn game on Saturday, the Friars were down by eight points by halftime. Providence didn’t end up getting closer on a 34-30 run the rest of the way and lost 75-63 in the end. Jayden Pierre led the way with 10 points, one rebound, and one assist as the only player to finish in double-figures. Wesley Cardet got close with nine points and three rebounds, as did Ryan Mela with nine points and four rebounds off the bench.

Why the Providence Friars will win

  • DePaul has lost 28 of its last 29 night games against the Big East Conference.
  • Providence has won each of its last six home games against DePaul.
  • Providence has won the first half in nine of its last 11 games against DePaul.

Why the DePaul Blue Demons will win

  • Providence has lost seven of its last eight games against the Big East Conference.

DePaul vs Providence Prediction

I’ll lean toward the Friars, but you could make a case either way. Providence shot a tepid 40 percent in their latest loss to UConn, giving up 53.8 percent on the other side along with a 36-27 rebounding deficit. If there’s good news it’s that the Friars had just seven turnovers, but that didn’t end up making much difference. Providence has now lost three straight, with just 115 combined points scored in the last pair.

These teams saw each other way back on December 10 in a 70-63 overtime win on the road for the Friars. Providence shot pretty well in that one (44.4 percent); DePaul did not (32.8 percent). The Friars also had a 46-36 rebounding edge but got into turnover trouble with 17 for 16 Demons points (DePaul had 11 for 16 Friars points themselves). This rematch could go a lot of different ways, but Providence should still have a slight advantage.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Providence Friars -7
