Cal State Northridge Matadors Betting Preview

Cal State Northridge kicked things off this year with a pretty routine matchup versus Nobel University. The Matadors went into the second half with a 48-22 edge and cruised on 51 more points from there in a 99-58 blowout win at home. Tops in scoring was Josh O’Garro with 20 points and 14 boards, while Aleks Szymczyk also doubled up on 15 points and 16 rebounds. Larry Hughes chipped in with 13 points in 22 minutes during the victory as well.

In game two versus Northern Iowa on Thursday, the Matadors were in trouble at the break with a 46-32 deficit. CSU Northridge didn’t get any closer on a 40-25 deficit from there and lost 86-57 on the road. Hughes was the leading scorer this time—and the only team player to finish in double-digits—with 21 points and two boards in 29 minutes of work. Josiah Davis got close with nine points, six assists and four rebounds in 29 minutes during the loss.

North Dakota Fighting Hawks Betting Preview

Over on the North Dakota side, they had the misfortune of matching up against a tough Alabama team on the road in their opener on Monday. The Hawks were down by 16 points by halftime and didn’t end up getting closer on a 43-30 second half in a 91-62 defeat in the end. Topping the scorers in the losing effort was Garrett Anderson with 13 points and three rebounds, while Eli King had 11 points with six boards and one assist. Anthony Smith added eight points with four assists in 22 minutes of work in the loss as well.

In game two versus UC Riverside, the Hawks were down by three points at home in the locker room. North Dakota was outscored by one point in the second half, leading to a 74-70 defeat in the end. Anthony Smith put up 15 points with two rebounds and two assists in just 10 minutes there, while both King (three rebounds; two assists) and Zach Kraft (one rebound; 22 minutes) each had 12 points. Josh Jones chipped in 10 points and five boards as well.

Cal State Northridge vs North Dakota Prediction

I’ll take a stab on North Dakota here, but I’m probably avoiding this game all together. The Hawks were pretty bad from the line (12-of-23 for 52.2 percent) in their latest loss to UC Riverside, and got out-rebounded 31-26 while allowing a scorching 57.1 percent shooting from the field on defense. The good news is that North Dakota had an advantage in the paint 40-38 and only committed nine turnovers while shooting pretty well (45.6 percent) themselves. Still, it wasn’t the most inspiring effort, especially at the free throw line.

As for the Matadors, they shot a miserable 32.7 percent with 19 turnovers and a 34-16 disadvantage in the paint during their loss to Northern Iowa. The rebounding was solid though (a 33-29 advantage), and CSUN wasn’t terrible from the line (17-of-23). Still, the lack of scoring and a 24-8 deficit in team assists don’t bode very well for a potential win. This one may end up being pretty competitive, but I like North Dakota a little better cover-wise.

Andrew Jett's Pick: North Dakota Fighting Hawks +4.5
