Charleston Cougars Betting Preview

Charleston has a spotty run or two in the can so far this year, but overall they’ve been quite the reliable team. The Cougars opened on a 4-2 stretch with wins over Southern Illinois, South Florida, Florida Atlantic, and the Citadel, then beat Northern Kentucky, Tusculum, Saint Joseph’s, and Wofford in the next four. Following a loss to Oregon State, the Cougars beat Loyola Chicago, Charlotte, Hampton, Towson, and Hofstra before a loss to Monmouth. Since then it’s been a 4-1 run with a loss to UNC Wilmington among wins over Campbell, Northeastern, Elon, and Stony Brook. The result has been a 17-5 overall record so far through the first 22 games of the season for the Cougars. 

In their Stony Brook matchup on Thursday, the Cougars opened the game with a 36-32 deficit. Charleston hit a 49-38 run in the second half, eventually securing an 81-74 victory in the end. Tops in scoring were AJ Smith (four rebounds; two assists; two steals) and Derrin Boyd (two rebounds; three assists), each with 25 points. Ante Brzovic added 17 points with five rebounds and three assists, while CJ Fulton had 11 rebounds, 11 assists, and two points in 39 minutes. 

William & Mary Tribe Betting Preview

Over on the Tribe’s side, they weren’t looking so good at the beginning of December. William & Mary has really gotten it turned around since then, though. The Tribe lost to Radford, Winthrop, North Carolina Central, NC State, App State, and Old Dominion in their first nine games. An 8-1 stretch came next with a loss to VCU among wins over Virginia-Lynchburg, Richmond, Navy, Hofstra, Stony Brook, Elon, North Carolina A&T, and Hampton. Since then it’s been a 2-2 run with losses to UNC Wilmington and Campbell sandwiched around wins over Hampton and Monmouth, giving the Tribe a 13-9 overall record in their first 22 games of the year. 

Matched up against Campbell on Thursday, the Tribe came into the second half sporting an ugly 38-17 deficit. William & Mary was blitzed even further in the second half on a 58-38 run and limped to the blowout road loss 96-55 in the end. Matteus Case was the lone starter to reach double-figures with 17 points, four rebounds, and one assist. Finn Lally came off the bench to provide 10 points, one rebound, and one assist in 13 minutes of work, though.

Charleston vs William & Mary Prediction 

I’m going to stay with Charleston. The Cougars had a slow start in their last outing versus a struggling Stony Brook team, but eventually got it together and took the victory. Charleston shot 52.6 percent from the field in that one with 35 rebounds, 22 team assists, and just eight turnovers. The Seawolves shot pretty well from 3-point range (12-of-28 for 42.9 percent), which helped keep them in the game. Charleston now has 76 or more points in four straight outings (a 3-1 run) and they should be able to score pretty well on Monday also. 

As for William & Mary, they’re coming off a downright ugly game versus Campbell. The Tribe had gone 2-1 in the previous three outings though, scoring 74 or more points in each game. I like a bounce-back performance from William & Mary here, but it should still be Charleston’s cover to take.
