Charleston Southern Buccaneers Betting Preview

It’s been a rough year for the Buccaneers so far, as they haven’t been able to maintain a win streak beyond two games. Charleston Southern opened up with a 3-7 run over their first 10 outings, then lost to Davidson, South Carolina State, North Alabama and Georgia in the next four. A 3-5 run came next with losses to Longwood, High Point, Winthrop, Presbyterian and UNC Asheville, then a 4-1 run with a loss to Winthrop among wins versus USC Upstate, Longwood, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian. Since then however, it’s been losses to UNC Asheville, High Point and USC Upstate for a 10-20 overall run through 30 games this year. 

In the USC Upstate matchup last weekend, the Buccaneers kicked off the game on a 42-30 deficit. Charleston Southern got better in the second half with a 39-37 run but ended up losing in the end 79-69. Tops in scoring was Taje’ Kelly with 23 points, 13 rebounds and two steals for a double-double. Lamar Oden Jr. chipped in 16 points with two rebounds and two assists, while Keenan Wilkins posted eight bench points with three boards. 

Radford Highlanders Betting Preview

Over on the Radford side, they were looking pretty good in mid-January but it’s been a spotty run since then. The Highlanders hit a 9-2 run to open the year, then lost to Utah, Colorado State, South Carolina and High Point (with a win over Virginia Lynchburg) in the next five. Next came wins over Winthrop, USC Upstate and Gardner Webb. Since then Radford has been on a 5-6 run with wins over Presbyterian, USC Upstate, Longwood, UNC Asheville and Gardner-Webb. Otherwise it’s been losses to Charleston Southern, Longwood, UNC Asheville, High Point, Winthrop and Presbyterian. That gives the Highlanders an 18-12 overall run so far. 

Matched up against Gardner-Webb on the road Wednesday, the Highlanders opened up the game with a 33-27 first-half advantage. Radford kept it going on a 30-29 advantage from there and took the win 63-56 in the end. David Early led the team off the bench with 14 points and two assists. Ibu Yamazaki was the only other team player to finish in double-figures (also off the bench) with 13 points, one rebound and one assist with three blocks in 24 minutes.

Charleston Southern vs Radford Prediction 

I’ll lean toward Radford. The Highlanders weren’t perfect versus a struggling Gardner-Webb team in their latest road win, but they got the job done. Radford hit 44.2 percent from the field and a nice 92.9 percent (13-of-14) from the line in that one, but also went just 4-of-18 (22.2 percent) from outside with a 38-32 rebounding deficit and 11 turnovers. The Highlanders have been alternating wins and losses since late January and can’t seem to find a rhythm. 

Radford lost 58-54 on the road the last time these teams saw each other on January 18. Neither team shot well in that one (34 percent and below), and the Highlanders coughed up 12 turnovers in the defeat. There’s plenty to improve upon, but I like Radford to get a little revenge in the home rematch.
