Charleston Southern Buccaneers Betting Preview

It’s been a rough year for Charleston Southern so far, though they’ve been doing a bit better lately. The Buccaneers went just 3-11 in their first 14 games, taking losses to Clemson, North Florida, UTRGV, VMI, LSU, Furman, Georgia Tech, Davidson, South Carolina State, North Alabama, and Georgia along the way. Charleston Southern would beat Columbia International and Gardner-Webb before a 1-5 run that featured losses to Longwood, High Point, Winthrop, Presbyterian, and UNC Asheville. Since then it’s been an improved 4-2 stretch with losses to Winthrop and UNC Asheville among wins versus USC Upstate, Longwood, Gardner-Webb, and Presbyterian. That gives the Bucs a 10-18 overall run through 28 games this year so far. 

In the UNC Asheville road rematch on Saturday, the Buccaneers came into the second half with a two-point deficit. Charleston Southern didn’t get any closer than that on a 41-40 run from there and took the eventual loss 75-72 in the end. Leading the team in scoring was Taje’ Kelly with 21 points and eight rebounds. Lamar Oden Jr. added 20 points with six boards, and RJ Johnson had 12 points with five boards and five assists in 38 minutes on the floor. 

High Point Panthers Betting Preview

Over on the High Point side, they’ve been quite the consistent team so far this year, with only a handful of losses. The Panthers went 12-2 over their first 14 games with wins over Coppin State, Jackson State, NC Central, UAB, American U, Old Dominion, Hampton, Pfeiffer, North Texas, App State, Carolina U, and Southern Illinois. A 3-3 run came next with wins over Radford, Charleston Southern, and Gardner-Webb among losses to Norfolk State, UNC Asheville, and Longwood. Since then the Panthers have taken out Presbyterian, USC Upstate, Winthrop, Presbyterian again, Radford, UNC Asheville, Longwood, and Winthrop again, giving High Point a 23-5 record across 28 games this season so far. 

Matched up against Winthrop on Saturday, the Panthers hit a 43-31 advantage in the first half. High Point followed that up with a 45-35 run that gave the team an 88-66 blowout victory in the end. Leading the charge was Kezza Giffa, who scored 16 points and five assists. D’Maurian Willams added 15 points with three boards, and Terry Anderson was tops off the bench with his 14 points, five rebounds, and one assist in 29 minutes of action on the court.

Charleston Southern vs High Point Prediction 

I’m going to take a stab at Charleston Southern, though you could certainly argue it either way. The Bucs didn’t play too badly in their last outing on the road versus a good UNC Asheville team, despite 13 turnovers and a fairly modest 42.9 percent shooting from the field. Charleston Southern has 71 or more points in three straight games now, going 2-1 in that time. 

The last time these teams saw each other back on January 8, the Bucs took a 93-79 home loss. Charleston Southern gave up 53.1 percent shooting with 11 turnovers for 14 Panthers points in that one, so there’s plenty to improve upon in the rematch. The Bucs are playing better these days though, so I think they’re capable of sticking around here.
