Cal Poly Mustangs Betting Preview

The Mustangs have had a choppy run so far this year and have been unable to stay above (or at) the .500 mark. Cal Poly opened with a 2-3 stretch featuring losses to USC, Colorado State and Montana alongside wins over Pacific Lutheran and Seattle U. Since then it’s been a 2-2 run with wins over Utah and Redlands sandwiched around Northern Arizona and Southeast Missouri State. That gives the Mustangs a 4-5 record across their first nine outings.

In the Redlands matchup on Saturday, the Mustangs opened on a 41-35 advantage in the first half. Cal Poly closed with a 46-46 tie in the second, leading to an 87-81 win in the end. Tops in scoring was Peter Bandelj with 21 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. Hamad Mousa added 19 points with two rebounds, and both Cayden Ward and Austin Goode (four rebounds) had 11 points apiece in the win.

Cal State Fullerton Titans Betting Preview

Over on the Cal State Fullerton side, they haven’t had much luck in the win column this year either. The Titans beat Caltech in their first outing, then lost four straight versus Wyoming, California, Pacific and Portland in succession. Since then it’s been a 2-1 run with a loss to Northern Colorado in between wins over St. Thomas-MN and Pepperdine. Through eight outings thus far the Titans have a 3-5 record.

Matched up against Pepperdine on Saturday, the Titans jumped out to a 40-33 edge by halftime. CSU Fullerton tacked on another 43 points from there, leading to an 83-69 win in the end. Joshua Ward logged 19 points with three rebounds and two assists in the victory, while Landon Seaman had 17 points with eight boards in 20 minutes of action as well.

Cal Poly vs Cal State Fullerton Prediction

I’ll lean toward CSU Fullerton here, but in reality I’m probably avoiding it. There’s not a lot to get excited about if you’re not a fan of either team, but the game should at least be competitive. CSU Fullerton did well against Pepperdine in their last game, hitting 47.9 percent from the field with a 38-28 rebounding advantage and just eight turnovers. The Titans had 15 team assists and did well in the paint with a 46-26 advantage. Cal State Fullerton is scoring well these days with 83 or more points in four straight games, but they’re giving up a lot on defense as well.

As for Cal Poly, they were able to stay in front of Redlands in their last outing thanks to 53.3 percent from the field, 42.9 percent (12-of-28) from outside and 11-of-12 (91.7 percent) from the line. The Mustangs had a 38-33 rebounding edge but also coughed up a whopping 21 turnovers in the six-point win. Cal Poly is scoring pretty well lately also, so they should be able to stay close here if all goes to plan.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Cal State Fullerton Titans -1.5
