Bethune-Cookman Wildcats Betting Preview

Bethune-Cookman has had a pretty shaky year so far, but they’ve done better since early January. The Wildcats opened the season on a rough 3-10 run featuring losses to Texas Tech, Nebraska, Fort Wayne, Tulane, Gardner-Webb, Minnesota, Virginia, West Virginia, Davidson, and Mississippi State. A 4-3 run came next with wins over Florida A&M, Grambling, MS Valley State, and AR-Pine Bluff among losses to Southern, Jackson State, and Alcorn State. Following wins over Alabama State, Alabama A&M, Prairie View, and Texas Southern the Wildcats took losses to Alcorn State and Jackson State. That gave B-CU an 11-15 record through 26 games overall.

In their matchup with Alabama A&M on Saturday, the Wildcats posted a 37-35 edge in the first half and hit a 31-29 run from there on the way to a 68-64 win. Leading the team in the victory was Daniel Rouzan with 19 points and seven boards.

Alabama State Hornets Betting Preview

Over on the Alabama State side, they similarly started out on a rocky stretch but they’ve also done better this calendar year. The Hornets went 4-9 in their first 13 outings, taking losses to UNLV, LSU, Akron, Cincinnati, SMU, Southern Miss, Norfolk State, Delaware State, and Missouri. Alabama State would go 8-5 in the next 13 games with losses to Jackson State, Alcorn State, Texas Southern, Bethune-Cookman, and Grambling. The wins otherwise were over MS Valley State, AR-Pine Bluff, Alabama A&M, Prairie View, Florida A&M, Southern, AR-Pine Bluff, and MS Valley State in succession for a 12-14 record through 26 games.

Matched up against Florida A&M in their Saturday outing, the Hornets played a tight game. Alabama State went into halftime with a 23-23 tie, then posted 37 points the rest of the way during a 60-59 win. The team’s only double-digit scorer was Amarr Knox with his 17 points, six rebounds, four steals, and one assist. CJ Hines got close with nine points and three rebounds, while both TJ Madlock (five rebounds) and Jasteven Walker (five rebounds) each had eight points in the win.

Why the Alabama State Hornets will win

  • Alabama State has won each of its last four night games.

Why the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats will win

  • Bethune-Cookman has won each of its last five games against Alabama State.

Bethune-Cookman vs Florida A&M Prediction

I’ll lean toward Alabama State here, but we should have a pretty good matchup overall if both teams play well. The Hornets didn’t play to their capabilities in a home matchup versus a middling Florida A&M team over the weekend, though. Alabama State shot just 31.3 percent from the field and an awful 2-of-22 (9.1 percent) from outside in their one-point win. The key stat was the 16 points scored off 15 Rattlers turnovers.

In the last meeting between the teams back on February 1, Bethune-Cookman secured a 67-64 home win. Alabama State didn’t play especially well in that one, posting just 36.8 percent from the field, 57.1 percent (12-of-21) from the line, a 45-34 rebounding deficit, and 10 turnovers. Despite all that, the Hornets still lost by only three points as the Wildcats had their own shooting woes from outside and the line. I like Alabama State to clean things up in the home rematch.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Alabama State Hornets -2.5
