Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers Betting Preview
Mount St. Mary’s was on a pretty nice pace for most of the season, but they’ve stumbled over the last quartet of outings. The Mountaineers went 11-5 in their first 16 games, losing to only Maryland, Georgetown, Marist, Loyola Maryland and George Mason in that time. Otherwise, it was wins over Notre Dame MD, Bucknell, St. Francis PA, Delaware State, Howard, Fairfield, Long Island U, Miami, Niagara, Manhattan, and Sacred Heart. Since then, however, the Mountaineers have recorded four straight losses. Those defeats have come by Rider, Quinnipiac, Siena, and Manhattan, giving Mount St. Mary’s an 11-9 overall run so far.
In the Manhattan matchup over the weekend, the Mountaineers held a 35-25 deficit at the break. Mount St. Mary’s kept the pace from there on a 39-39 run but still lost by double-digits 74-64. Dola Adebayo put up 20 points with seven rebounds and one assist, while Dallas Hobbs put up 13 points with three rebounds and four turnovers. Carmelo Pacheco chipped in with eight points, one rebound, and one assist in 33 minutes of work during the loss as well.
Merrimack Warriors Betting Preview
Over on the Merrimack side, they opened the season on a pretty rough run. That said, the Warriors have only lost consecutive games once since late November. Merrimack beat Vermont in their opener, then fell to VCU, Princeton, Rutgers, Butler, UMass Lowell, and UTSA in succession during the next six outings. A 7-3 run came next with losses to Stanford, St. Mary’s, and Quinnipiac alongside wins over Troy, Canisius, Niagara, Boston U, Fairfield, Sacred Heart, and Manhattan. The Warriors have won three straight since then, taking out Siena, Saint Peter’s, and Fairfield in that trio for an identical 11-9 record through the first 20 games thus far.
Matched up against Fairfield in their Saturday game, the Warriors came out of the locker room with a dominant 47-23 edge. Merrimack fell behind a bit in the second on a 31-28 deficit but still managed a sizable win 75-54 in the end. Adam Clark led the team with 20 points with 12 assists, four rebounds, and three steals. Matt Becht was the high man in scoring with 22 points, and Bryan Etumnu added seven points with 12 boards and a pair of steals in 36 minutes.
Why the Merrimack Warriors will win
- Merrimack has won 11 of its last 12 games at Hammel Court.
- Mount St. Mary’s has lost seven of its last eight night games against Conference opponents.
- Merrimack has won the first half in nine of its last 10 night games at Hammel Court against non-AP-ranked opponents.
Mount St. Mary’s vs Merrimack Prediction
I’ll stick with Merrimack. The Warriors didn’t have any issues with Fairfield in their last outing, eventually shooting 50.9 percent from the field with 34 rebounds and 16 team assists in a 21-point win. Merrimack held the Stags to just 33.3 percent shooting on the other side as well. The Warriors aren’t the highest-scoring team in the world this year, but they’re controlling games well with good defense. Merrimack has kept opponents below 69 points in every win so far. They’ll want to keep this total low.
As for Mount St. Mary’s, they’ve been unable to eclipse 68 points in any of their last four games (all losses). The Mountaineers can put up some decent totals when the matchup is right, but I don’t see them penetrating Merrimack’s defense well enough to do so here.
