The Saints have been a pretty mixed bag this year. They’ve got a couple of solid runs so far, but haven’t been able to stay above .500 since way back in November. Siena opened with a 3-4 run featuring wins over Brown, Bryant, and American U ahead of losses to Albany, Xavier, Miami-OH, and Jacksonville. A 4-3 stretch came next with wins over Bucknell, Canisius, Cornell, and Manhattan among losses to Niagara, St. Bonaventure, and Holy Cross. The next four games were a 1-3 run though, with a lone win over Sacred Heart among losses to Iona, Quinnipiac, and Merrimack. The result was an 8-10 overall record through 18 games.

In the Mount St. Mary’s matchup on Thursday, the Saints held a 43-36 edge by the end of the first half. Siena kept it rolling from there on a 39-32 run and took the eventual win 82-68. Leading the team in scoring was Brendan Coyle with 26 points and three rebounds. Justice Shoats added 18 points with three boards and six assists, while Gavin Doty picked up 11 rebounds with eight points in 40 minutes of work on the floor.

Iona Gaels Betting Preview

Over on the Gaels’ side, they entered the season on a pretty spotty run. Iona hasn’t been able to find their stride quite yet, as they’ve been unable to string together more than two wins thus far. A 2-8 record came over the Gaels’ first 10 games, with wins over Vermont and Tarleton State among losses to Princeton, Hofstra, Delaware, West Virginia, Cornell, Indiana State, Rice, and Sacred Heart. The Gaels went 4-4 over the next eight games, though. Those wins were versus Saint Peter’s, Colgate, Siena and Canisius. Otherwise, it was losses to Harvard, Marist, Fairfield, and Quinnipiac in that time for a 6-12 overall record through their first 18 outings.

Matched up against Rider on Thursday, the Gaels held a solid 34-27 edge going into the locker room. Iona lost a little bit of ground in the second half but held on for the eventual win 73-67 in the end. Leading the team in scoring was Adam Njie with 23 points, three rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Clarence Rupert added 13 points with six rebounds and three assists, while Justin Menard had 10 points with four assists in 30 minutes.

I’ll lean toward Iona, but you could certainly call this one either way. The Gaels looked pretty good against Rider in their last outing, shooting 46.6 percent from the field with 31 rebounds and 12-of-14 (85.7 percent) from the line. Iona also scored 20 points off 17 Broncs turnovers, which definitely helped keep the tide in their favor. The Gaels are looking better over the last five games (a 3-2 run) with 73 or more points scored in all three wins during that time. Iona is likely going to have to reach that threshold here as well.

The last time these teams met, the Gaels eked out a 74-73 road win on January 5. I expect this one to be close as well, with Iona securing a tight cover at home. Should be a fun one to watch.
