St. Bonaventure Bonnies Betting Preview

The Bonnies were one of the most consistent teams in the nation during their first 15 games, but since then they’ve fallen on hard times. St. Bonaventure hit a 14-1 run out of the gate. The lone loss came on November 28 versus Utah State. Otherwise, it was wins over Cal State Northridge, Canisius, Florida Gulf Coast, Le Moyne, Mansfield, Bryant, Northern Iowa, Bucknell, Buffalo, Providence, Siena, Niagara, VCU, and Fordham in succession. Since then, however, the Bonnies have dropped four of their last five outings. The lone victory came versus Richmond, in the middle of losses to Saint Louis, La Salle, Duquesne, and George Mason for a 15-5 overall record so far this season for the Bonnies.

St. Bonaventure last appeared on the court on Tuesday versus George Mason. In that one, the Bonnies were blitzed 45-31 in the first half and only got a point closer in an eventual 75-62 defeat. Leading the team in scoring as the only starter in double-digits was Melvin Council with 18 points, six boards, and four assists. Duane Thompson came off the bench to hit double-digits himself with 16 points, seven rebounds, and a steal in 21 minutes of work on the floor.

VCU Rams Betting Preview

Over on the VCU side, they’ve been remarkably consistent overall this year. The Rams have only one instance of consecutive defeats thus far. After beating Bellarmine, Boston College, Merrimack, and Loyola MD, VCU fell to Seton Hall and Nevada. A win streak over Miami, Elizabeth City State, Georgia Southern, Penn, and Colorado State came next, then losses to New Mexico and St. Bonaventure around a win versus William & Mary. Since then it’s been five straight wins over Loyola Chicago, Fordham, Saint Louis, Saint Joseph’s, and Rhode Island for the Rams, giving them a 15-4 overall record so far this season.

Matched up against Rhode Island in the Tuesday outing, the Rams held a 40-34 edge by the break. VCU kept it going in the second half on a 41-23 run and took the victory 81-57 in the end. Leading the way was Joe Bamisile with 24 points and three boards. Max Shulga added 15 points with seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Zeb Jackson led the bench players with 11 points, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals in 18 minutes on the court.

Why the VCU Rams will win

  • VCU has won each of its last nine games at Stuart C. Siegel Center against non-AP-ranked opponents.
  • St. Bonaventure has lost five of its last six road night games against Conference opponents.
  • St. Bonaventure has lost the first half in 21 of its last 28 road night games against Conference opponents.

Why the St. Bonaventure Bonnies will win

  • St. Bonaventure has won six of its last seven games against VCU.

St. Bonaventure vs VCU Prediction

I’m staying with VCU. The Rams made short work of a pretty good Rhode Island team in their last outing, shooting 42.6 percent from the field with a 42-34 rebounding advantage and 30 points from a whopping 27 Rams turnovers. VCU was a bit sloppy themselves with 15 turnovers, however, no one but Jackson (four) had more than two. The Rams have now scored 71 or more points in nine straight games, a 7-2 run.

These teams last saw each other on New Year’s Eve in a 77-75 home win for the Bonnies. VCU shot well in that one (48.3 percent) and had a 33-30 rebounding edge. That said, the Rams also gave up 50 percent shooting and had 11 turnovers for 11 Bonnies points. Ball security has to be a high priority in this rematch, but VCU should be very well-equipped to post a revenge victory in this one. Should be a fun matchup.

Andrew Jett's Pick: VCU Rams -10.5
