Morgan State Bears Betting Preview
The Bears’ season has contained a couple of promising runs so far, but overall the team is struggling. Morgan State opened up the year at 3-2 with wins over Frostburg State, District of Columbia, and NJIT with losses otherwise versus Mercyhurst and Longwood. The Bears would lose four straight versus North Carolina A&T, Buffalo, Towson, and UMBC after that, then beat Central Penn, Cheyney PA, and Campbell as part of a 3-2 stretch. The losses otherwise were versus Bowling Green and Xavier at that time. Since then it’s been a 1-3 run with losses to Iowa State, Minnesota, and South Carolina State ahead of a win over NC Central for a 7-11 run.
In the NC Central matchup on Tuesday, the Bears entered the locker room in a 41-41 tie. Morgan State kept the pace from there and eventually won it in double overtime 102-98. Leading the team in scoring was Kameron Hobbs with 40 points, seven boards, and one assist. Will Thomas doubled up on 29 points with 10 boards, and Amahrie Simpkins added 15 points with five rebounds and five assists. Marland Harris chipped in four points off the bench.
Howard Bison Betting Preview
Over on the Howard side, they lost to Kansas and Missouri in their first two outings, then picked up wins over Dillard, Tennessee State, and Florida International. The Bears hit a rough 2-7 run over the next nine games though, beating only Virginia-Lynchburg and UNC Wilmington. Otherwise, it was losses versus Boston University, UMBC, Mount St. Mary’s, Cincinnati, Drexel, Hampton, and Yale. Howard would then stop the bleeding on a 100-94 win over Delaware State (before a postponed game versus MD Eastern Shore) for a 6-9 record.
In the Delaware State game last Saturday, the Bison entered the second half with a 55-47 edge. Howard kept the pace pretty well from there on 45 more points and ended up winning 100-94 in the end. Leading the team in scoring was Blake Harper with 34 points, six rebounds, and two assists. Cameron Shockley-Okeke added 24 points with three boards and two assists, while Marcus Dockery had 19 points with six assists and three boards. Jaren Johnson put up 12 points, six assists, and four rebounds to lead the team off the bench in the win.
Why the Howard Bison will win
- Howard has won eight of its last nine games against the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
- Morgan State has lost each of its last three road games after coming off overtime.
- Morgan State has lost the first half in each of its last four road games against non-AP-ranked opponents.
Why the Morgan State Bears will win
- Howard has lost six of its last seven day games against non-AP-ranked opponents.
- Morgan State has won the first half in four of its last five games at Burr Gymnasium.
Morgan State vs Howard Prediction
I’ll lean toward Howard. Probably not touching this one, though. The Bison should be very well-rested heading into this one and they’ve had ample time to prep for Saturday’s matchup. In the Delaware State game, Howard shot extremely well, notching 59.6 percent from the field with 50 percent (11-of-22) from 3-point range and 27-of-27 from the line. The 18 turnovers were just about the only thing worth complaining about. It was a nice (and much-needed) effort. The Bison had scored fewer than 68 points in three straight (all losses) prior to that, so notching a good total on Saturday will be important.
As for Morgan State, they’ve scored 68 or more points in five straight games (helped by a double-overtime win in their last outing). Howard is going to have to push the issue on offense here, but I think they’ve got a good shot at pulling it off.
