Monmouth Hawks Betting Preview
The Hawks are coming off a season where they finished 18-15 overall with a 10-8 record in Costal Athletic Association games. Monmouth landed near the middle of the pack in the standings and eventually lost to Charleston in the Quarterfinals of the conference tourney.
This year Monmouth brings back head coach King Rice for his 14th season. He’ll get back two of his five starters from last year’s middling campaign but will be lacking son Xander who is playing pro ball in Greece this year. Jack Collins (10.7 PPG) will have to step up in Xander’s place.
Michigan State Spartans Betting Preview
Over on the Michigan State side, they’re coming off a 20-15 overall effort last year with a 10-10 record in the Big Ten. The Spartans similarly finished near the middle of the standings, and would fall in the conference tournament to Purdue before a Second-Round exit (North Carolina) in the national tourney.
The Spartans will have longtime fixture Tom Izzo back in his 30th season at the helm. Izzo will have just one returning starter though, so we’ll see plenty of new faces. Tyson Walker (graduation) and Mady Sissoko (transfer to California) are a couple of the notable departures.
Why the Michigan State Spartans will win
- Michigan State has won 24 of its last 25 games against non-Conference opponents at Jack Breslin Student Events Center.
- Monmouth has lost seven of its last eight Monday games against non-Conference opponents.
- Monmouth has lost the first half in six of its last seven games against non-Conference opponents.
Why the Monmouth Hawks will win
- Monmouth has won four of its last five day games against non-AP-ranked opponents.
Matchup/League Facts
- Michigan State ranked 26th among Division 1 teams for opponent field goals made per game last season (22.9).
- Michigan State ranked 33rd among Division 1 teams for assists per game last season (15.9).
Monmouth vs Michigan State Prediction
I’ll probably just stick with Michigan State. Izzo (somewhat uncharacteristically) added a pair of players from the transfer portal this year in senior Frankie Fidler (20.1 PPG) and center Szymon Zapala (9.8 PPG). They’ll join the lone returning starter Jaden Akins (10.4 PPG) in their attempt to get back to a Final Four. After some international team-building exhibition games in the offseason, Michigan State should start off strong.
As for Monmouth, they’ve got a nice group of returning sophomores to build around Collins this year. Specifically Cornelius Robinson (5.1 PPG) and Abdi Bashir (6.3 PPG) should be key pieces. The absence of the younger Rice however, will certainly be felt—especially early.
