It’s Hard to Be Worse for VMI

The good news for the VMI Keydets is that it’s hard to be worse than they were last season, but there are some major concerns about how bad they might actually be. The only win came against Furman back on November 2nd, by four points. Most games weren’t that close, and the defense was a major concern. Against Western Carolina, they gave up 58 points, and against Georgia Tech they gave up 59 points. 

This season, VMI has gotten younger, and they hope that is the way they can rebuild this program. VMI wide receiver Owen Sweeny is back, and the hope is that he can have a big season. Danny Rocco is leading the troops as the head coach, and he has taken some shots at last year’s team about how hungry they were for success. It’s still to be seen if that is going to be enough to win games, but at least it appears this team could be heading in the right direction. 

How Does Navy Build on Last Year?

Navy finished the 2024 season with 10-3 record, including 6-2 in AAC play, and they finished it off with a win over Oklahoma in the Armed Forces Bowl. In the era of the transfer portal, Navy doesn’t participate but there is still a belief that this team can be competitive in the AAC again. This team did lose a few pieces but actually has a ton of talent back from 2024. The star under center for Navy is Blake Horvath, who not only can run but can also hurt defenses with his legs. Last season he threw for 1,353 yards and rushed for another 1,246 yards and 17 touchdowns. On defense, it starts up front with the defensive line, and the guy anchoring that group is Landon Robinson. Last season he finished with 61 tackles and four sacks. On paper this looks like it should be a pretty comfortable victory, but it’s going to be important that they get out to a fast start. The last thing they want to do here, is get out to a slow start and give VMI any sort of hope. 

VMI vs Navy Prediction

Navy is probably going to win this game, and they know that, which means they aren’t going to want to show all their tricks in the first game. VMI might be a bit improved this season, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to show in this game. I am sold on this Navy defense, at least with what they are going to do in this game, and that is going to be the difference here. I don’t love a play on the side, but Navy’s defense and pace on offense will be enough to keep this game under the total. Especially in the second half, they are going to really grind this one out on the ground.
