A summary that ties it all together and produces a favorable betting outcome for the UAB vs Navy game
UAB didn’t have a great season in 2024. The Blazers went just 3-9 overall in the second year of head coach Trent Dilfer’s tenure, bagging a 2-6 run in conference play. That result would leave UAB ahead of only Florida Atlantic and Tulsa in the American Athletic standings. After an early-season six-game losing streak, the Blazers went 2-3 down the stretch. Their final outing was a November 30 loss at Charlotte.
This year the Blazers kicked off their schedule with a matchup versus Alabama State. That one turned into a shootout—UAB scored points in every quarter (and gave up points in every quarter) during a 52-42 win. QB Jalen Kitna finished with 247 yards and two scores off 18-of-23 passing, while Jevon Jackson led the charge on the ground with 17 totes for 166 yards and two touchdowns of his own. Corri Milliner was the team’s leading receiver with five catches for 98 yards and a touchdown.
Over on the Navy side, they had a much better season in 2024. The Midshipmen were initially predicted to finish in 11th place among the American Athletic, but blew those expectations away with a 10-3 run and a 6-2 result in conference play. That would put Navy behind only Army and Tulane in the standings. After a 1-3 run in the middle of the season that included losses to Notre Dame, Rice and Tulane, the Midshipmen closed with wins over East Carolina, Army and Oklahoma (Armed Forces Bowl) to finish off their stellar campaign.
Navy is off to a good start in 2025 as well. The Midshipmen didn’t have much trouble with VMI over the weekend, scoring double-digit points in each of the final three quarters during a 52-7 blowout victory. Blake Horvath completed six of his seven pass attempts on the way to 66 yards and a TD, but the real star of the show was Braxton Woodson who led the rush with seven totes for 180 yards and two scores. Eli Heidenreich topped the receivers with six catches for 65 yards and a touchdown.
I’m going to stick with Navy. The Midshipmen established their identity as a run-first—and second, and third, usually—team in their win over UAB. Heidenreich was the only receiver with more than one catch or more than 12 yards as Navy racked up a stellar 464 yards on the ground. The Midshipmen added 7.9 yards per play, 26 first downs and an excellent 10-of-13 rate on third-down tries. The defense was great on the other side, holding the Keydets to just 212 yards total (197 passing), 4.2 yards per play, nine first downs and 4-of-14 on third-down conversions. Navy’s 35:27 in time of possession gave VMI little time to do anything offensively.
As for UAB, they notched 520 total yards (247 passing) and 9.0 yards per play in their win over Alabama State. Trouble is, the Blazers also gave up 514 on the other side—including 202 on the ground, 7.9 yards per play and 13-of-15 on third downs. Those numbers look very promising for the Navy offensive attack.
